The Ohio State Beekeepers Association renews the 4-H Partnership Program for 2019!

4-H Partnership Program

The Ohio State Beekeepers Association renews the 4-H Partnership Program for 2019!

For 2019, the OSBA will selectively sponsor five 4-H members across Ohio by providing the basic woodenware and toolkits to establish 2 complete hives.

By partnering OSBA, Extension 4-H staff, and local beekeeping organizations with the 4-H members undertaking the beekeeping project, the program will support and encourage young beekeepers by providing experienced practical support and reducing the expenses required to get started in beekeeping. Ideally, active participation of key players, including the student, his/her guardian, 4H advisor, local association and a mentor will significantly increase the likelihood of success of the 4-H beekeeper through experiential learning. Local beekeeping associations who participate gain visibility to a new and vital audience and increase positive community involvement of the “next generation” of beekeepers.

While the document below explains the program guidelines in detail, here is a quick overview:

Selection Criteria

  1. Youth must be between the ages of 12 and 18 by January 1st of the scholarship year (2019), be a member of 4-H, and enrolled in public, private or home school.
  2. Applicant must complete and return the application by November 2nd, 2018.

Selection Process

  1. The selection committee will carefully consider each candidate and select finalists.
  2. The OSBA 4H Beekeeping Partnership Program Scholars will be announced by December 3rd, 2018.

The selected Partnership Program Scholars will receive:

  1. Woodenware and tools for two hives (see attached document):
  2. 1 year free membership to the OSBA, with electronic newsletter
  3. Free attendance to the OSBA Fall Convention (including 2 guests).
  4. OSBA Beekeeper Training DVD

Families,

As I did last year, I am circulating a survey link in which families can evaluate the 2018 Junior Fair and also make formal suggestions for changes or additions to the White Pages digitally (as opposed to the paper form).

While we want to hear everyone’s feedback, I encourage you to find a way to make your feedback constructive and well-meaning. Please remember that the events we put on are part of a county fair, not a national show. They are majorly planned and administered by a team of 28 teen leaders and a handful of adults. 50% of our Junior Fair Board members were first year members in 2018. While we try our best, we are not always perfect. The Junior Fair Board will read and review any data collected via the survey themselves. Be kind. HELP us make the fair better. Suggest solutions instead of filing complaints.

Also, please use this survey for Junior Fair feedback only! We have no control over gate prices, parking, camping, fairgrounds facilities, SFB golf carts and behavior, etc. I encourage you to attend a SFB meeting if you have concerns regarding the SFB. They are held the third Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. and are open to the public.

Please respond to the survey no later than Friday, August 31.

Thank you!

Cassie

Support the Shelby County Junior Fair!!
Saturday, August 18th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As Junior Fair expenses increase, the Shelby County Junior Fairboard is continuing to raise funds. This year, the group will again host a county-wide rummage sale at the fairgrounds. Proceeds from the sale will be used to pay for Junior Fair expenses and improve Junior Fair facilities. Aluminum cans will also be collected during the sale to benefit SCARF animal rescue.

We are looking for people to:
1) Donate items to the sale (drop-off details below)
2) Volunteer time working the sale (In need of volunteer hours for community service, resumes, college applications, etc.? This counts!!)

We are also asking all clubs, chapters and troops to help the Junior Fairboard distribute the flyer announcing the Rummage Sale within their local communities. Please let your friends, family and other civic organizations know about the sale and encourage them to both donate and purchase items, if able.

Aluminum Can Drive: Aluminum cans will also be collected during the sale to benefit SCARF animal rescue.

Have items to donate?

Donations from the public are welcome. Drop-offs will be accepted on August 15, 16 and 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. New or clean, gently-used items only please. See suggested items below. All items remaining after the sale will be donated to a local charity.

Items desired: clothes; baby gear; toys; kitchenware; tools; fishing, hunting and camping items; furniture; antiques; appliances; household items and electronics. Aluminum cans to benefit SCARF animal rescue will also be collected.

The Rummage Sale will be open to public on Saturday, August 18th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The location for the sale will be the Beige Building across from the Senior Fair Office on the SHELBY CO. FAIRGROUNDS.

The contest winner will receive the following: a one-year membership in the OCBA, one bred ewe the first year, one ram the second year and in the third year the youth will donate a lamb to continue the award.

The application deadline is September 30th. For an application and contest rules please contact Bob Hunter at (614)483-3202 or at rpkjhunter@msn.com.
