***Important Information for Livestock Sale Participants***

If a Junior Fair market livestock exhibitor in your family plans to participate in the 2020 livestock sale, they will need to submit a completed IRS W-9 form. W-9’s have to be collected by the Shelby County Agricultural Society to comply with the IRS’s federal tax laws for reporting self-employment income. More information pertinent to this topic can be found at the following links or by visiting go.osu.edu/shelbysale.

– Farmer’s Tax Guide for 2019 Returns (pages 17 and 74)

– National 4-H Livestock Sales and Prize Winnings Fact Sheet

– MSU Extension Web Page on 4-H Livestock Sales and the IRS

Individual information on the W-9 should match that of the youth whose name the sale check will be made out to, NOT the parent. In most cases, exhibitors will mark “Individual/Sole Proprietor” UNLESS their family owns a farm with an LLC/tax ID. In those cases, exhibitors can claim the income under that entity’s tax umbrella.

Because OSU Extension is a partner of the Shelby County Agricultural Society and has secure institutional data policies and servers, they will be collecting completed W-9 forms.

Completed forms can be:

  • Mailed or dropped off to the OSU Extension office BEFORE fair week events start (Sunday, July 26). Mailing and physical address for the Extension Office: Shelby County Extension, c/o Cassie Dietrich, 810 Fair Rd., Sidney, OH 45365. We do have a locked dropbox which these forms can be placed in after hours.
  • Handed directly to Cassie Dietrich the day of the check-in/show. We will have blank copies available each day.
    .
  • Dropped off at the Senior Fair Board/Secretary’s office during fair week events (Sunday, July 26 – Thursday, July 30). Look for the blue paper tote near Michelle’s desk.

DO NOT TAKE FORMS TO JUNIOR FAIR HEADQUARTERS OR THE SALE COMMITTEE BARN!!!!

If completed forms are not turned in, exhibitors will not be able to pick up their sale check on Consignor’s Night. At the end of the tax year, 1099 forms will be issued to qualifying exhibitors by mail. If you have questions about how to handle a 1099 for tax return purposes, please talk to a qualified tax advisor.

We understand this is ANOTHER change for this year; however, it is the Shelby County Agricultural Society’s legal responsibility to abide by the federal tax laws.

Thank you for your understanding.

Cassie

Thinking of being a 4-H Volunteer?

NEW VOLUNTEERS

We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers. Individuals interested in being a 4-H Volunteer must complete a number of steps before they can be approved to be in the care, custody and control of our 4-H youth. The following explains the processes involved. Thank you for your interest!

Shelby County 4-H Foundation Scholarship

Shelby County 4-H Foundation Scholarship Program (Formally 4-H Performance Standards of Excellence)

The Shelby County 4-H Foundation will award up to four $500 Colleges scholarships to current members of Shelby County 4-H pursuing a college degree. Each applicant will be asked to meet a set of minimum standards, verified by his/her local 4-H Advisor, school official, and parent. The deadline for submitting the “Shelby County 4-H Foundation Scholarship Program” application and supporting documentation is July 22. All applicants who meet the minimum standards will be placed in a lottery, with a random drawing selecting the college scholarship winner(s). This scholarship program is available ONLY to 2019-2020 (school year) high school seniors and college freshmen.
