Undergraduate researcher awarded for work at 9/11 Museum

Congratulations to Maria Bowen, with whom I worked as she traveled to New York City to examine the rhetoric of unity presented at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Maria’s presentation, “You, Me, and 9/11,” was awarded 2nd prize at the Ohio State Newark Student Research Forum on March 5.

Maria’s research documented the way that 3,000 stories are renarrated into an individualized yet unified presentation. Combining object and narrative with intense personalized emotion, the museum encourages a type of identification that encourages visitors themselves to complete the circle and pick up the mantle of heroism. Thus “Never Forget” becomes a pledge of resilience, to continually resist not terrorism per se but the corrosive effects of its potential for fear and division.
