Our book on female rhetors in the era from Suffrage to the Second World War is out! Published by Southern Illinois UP, Women and Rhetoric between the Wars gathers insightful essays from diverse scholars on women whose practices and theories helped shape the field of modern rhetoric. We call into question received canonical wisdom both of the origins of modern theory (“it was all done by men in the 40s and 50s”) and also of the waves of feminism (“after suffrage women were silent until 1960, women in public life today are true pioneers”). With our book we hope both to open new areas of scholarship on the role of early professionalism in women’s public voice and to sound a warning against complacency among professionals today. Excellent scholars, both established and new, and beautiful production from Southern Illinois UP, the leader in feminist rhetorical publishing, make for a book that Ann, Janet, and I are proud to have midwifed into being.
