My approach to teaching is heavily informed by my research on modern rhetorical theories of language as symbolic action—language affecting/affected by the world around the language-user. My current research focuses on the role of culture in promoting truth-telling and social reconciliation, and I work with students to develop not only their ethical, eloquent writing voices but also their critical appreciation for the role of humanistic thought in modern society. I won the campus’s excellence in teaching award in 2016 and the faculty mentoring award in 2019.
The Minor in Professional Writing
I coordinated for ten years the Professional Writing Minor on the Newark Campus. The Professional Writing Minor provided a cadre of students from multiple minors with practical experience in the kinds of 21st century writing used by businesses, non-profits, government and social service agencies. With just five classes, including a personalized high-level internship, students added a minor to any degree, while supporting non-profit partners throughout Licking County.
