Reflection on service hours

This fall semester I was involved in two different volunteer opportunities, the first one was community commitment, for GEM elementary school, during this I was given the opportunity to give back to the community. We spent five hours on a Saturday cleaning up and preparing the school for the first day. We went through different classrooms cleaning up and making everything nice, we also mulched the play ground. This was very important to give back and to see the difference that I made even though it was just a small contribution. The gratefulness that the teachers and staff had for us to come in and help them. The other volunteer opportunity that I had was I spent an hour for six days going to pilot dogs and walking dogs that were in training to be helper dogs for the blind. This was very inspiring that I was helping not only the dog but helping the person who would potentially have that dog as well. I spent an hour just walking the dog around and training the dog simply by having it out and about will have a big difference in the long run when the dog will graduate from the program and get a owner who it will assist.

Volunteer at Dodging Deltas

I was able to be apart for my first year at an event called Dodging Deltas, I volunteered for four hours and was able to be a coach as well. Dodging Deltas is an event where fraternities and sororities put together teams to compete in a dodgeball tournament to raise money for St. Judes hospital. During volunteering I was a coach for a sororities dodge ball team and cheered them on as well as helped them while they were playing. I also helped organize which team went where and the set up of the courts as well as get teams together. I was able to learn how organized and efficient that I was and it helped me to become a more open and also person who was able to take charge and help others. This volunteering helped me to be a leader because I had to lead people and show them what to do as well as lead my team through different games, whether it was a victory or a loss I had to bring them up no matter what, even when we only had one girl out on the court I still cheered her on and was able to lead her. Because of service learning I am better at leading others and putting my voice out where others can here and I became more outgoing as a person.

Volunteer at Dunn Dash

I volunteered at the Dunn Dash for 8 hours and was able to learn a lot and also grow as a person. Dunn Dash is a fundraiser that raises money for the Dunn Scholars program and is a triathlon that goes from running for 15 minutes than biking for 15 minutes, then finally swimming for 15 minutes. I give the people a lot of props for those who participated in the Dunn Dash, for they ran, biked, and swam. I could never so props to those people who participated, but also it really boosted my spirits because I was able to cheer people on and push them to push themselves. I took their time on the bike and how far they went in 15 minutes. I was the person who cheered them on and got them more water if needed. I learned that I do have a voice and I am able to help people in the smallest ways as just putting a smile on my face and being very talkative and polite as well as nice. I was impacted as a leader to increase my voice and by volunteering I was able to voice out how I was not only helpful but I was actually able to lead and help people to better themselves. Because of service learning I am a better and stronger person mentally.

Hot Chocolate 15/5k Reflection

I volunteered at the hot chocolate 15/5k on November 18th, 2018 from 5:45-11:30pm. This was a very cool experience like it was similar to the Columbus Marathon a lot of things ran the same; however, they gave the runners a lot of cool gear and also the cool cups of hot chocolate with different snacks. They also gave these to the volunteers which was very cool, and the chocolate was very good. I also had the opportunity to hold the finish line for the runners this was really cool being able to stand at the finish line and see the runners run through. This was very cool to see the runners faces being so happy that they accomplished this race, their faces were thrilled. Holding the finish line was very inspirational, because now I am inspired to run the race myself, and be apart of something like that. I am very thrilled that I was able to be apart of this experience and learn so much about hard work that goes into a race to be successful and also the hardworking runners that participate in it.

Reflection on service hours

I volunteered at the Columbus Marathon for 5 hours on October 21st, 2018 from 7:00am-1:00pm. This was really eye opening for me because I was able to see the runners who inspired me and really taught me that nothing is impossible because there were not only young people but older people as well running. Being apart of this was very informational being able to see how a marathon is run and how official and also how you can see all the different tactics of a marathon being successful. I also met a worker who had been working for the Columbus Marathon for 30 years, he was telling me about all the different stories and different things that he has been through while volunteering and being apart of the Marathon, this was also very cool to be able to sit down and talk to him about this and learn all of this while able to be apart of this.

True Colors

When applying the idea of true colors, being split into four different colors, as how to match with your personality and how you view the world. The different colors all play an aspect into working together, with being an orange I am active, open-minded, adventurous. This would make it easy in the scholars program because I will be open to do more activities, with being sporty and well. I will also be open to trying new things and venturing out, this will be good to bring to the program because coming to a new place and doing new things is something that I enjoy and find easy to do. I found out that this color will be helpful for going out on the world and trying new things. This will also help with other programs such as sports, because coming to a team and being able to not fear other teams and think that you can do anything is something I would be able to help with. While other colors also play a role into bringing different things to organizations, they all are different and help in other ways. Every organization or team needs diversity and also needs different colors to help get things done and be successful. I also believe that someone is truly not one color and that they may share some of the same personality traits as those of others colors, even if they are not catorgized in that color.

Leadership Reflection

An example of leadership I want to reflect on is during soccer, when the captains stepped up during the district final game and brought the team together. Their words helped the team to work together and we ended up winning the game, it was the small effort of just the captains saying some words that really impacted the team. I would decribe it as leadership, because we were struggling as a team and we really needed to come together, with the captains stepping up they showed to be true leaders. Another reason why I would describe this as leadership is, because the role of a captain is to be a leader of the team and to help them when in times of need, so they already have the leadership title; it was all about if they followed through with their jobs to actually lead and help the team. All in all they really helped bring the team together, and without them leading the team we would not have been able to win the game.
