Realism and Emotion
During the Counter-Reformation, the Catholic Church challenged artists to portray religious subject matter with realism and emotion.  This was the beginning of the Baroque Era.  It was a reflection of movement in composition  Along with vivid contrast in color and dark and light, new emotional intensity began appearing in the paintings of this time.  Jan Vermeer is a well known Baroque artist.  His painting of the Girl with a Pearl Earring, c. 1665 shows an outstanding example of Baroque style.
