Art Appreciation

My name is Tammy Gabrelcik.  I have an undergraduate degree in Art Education from OSU.  I am presently working on my masters degree in Educational Technology at OSU.  I have teaching experience in art k-12 public school.  I also have had many opportunities to teach in non-traditional school settings, such as the Mohican Outdoor School; www.mohicanoutdoorschool.org in Loudenville, Ohio.   As my career opportunities changed, I had interest in teaching at the preschool level.  At this time I opened a licensed preschool in Knox County and taught in early childhood education for 8 years.

My Family

While my teaching experience was growing, so was my family and I decided to stay home and raise my children.  During my time at home, I continued teaching through volunteer positions in the community and my church.  I was often asked to write lesson plans, and develop curriculum for various settings.  Presently, I am working part time with my husband’s growing internet company.  www.lubricationspecialties.com .   We are trying to develop an image of educating consumers about oil additive products.  The Educational Technology classes have given me many great ideas to help grow his company’s program for his website.

Community Art Project

Through working with a variety of age groups, I have developed and attitude that education should be an experience for the learners as much as possible, especially in the primary grades. Experiences in learning about the world give way to retaining facts in long term memory. Teaching through living history, drama, or hands on experiences has been a strong direction for my philosophy in education. I have observed my own children studying through text books about various topics, yet when they experience the concept, for example, visiting a museum, traveling to new environments, they seem to gain much more knowledge.

I know that not all situations are conducive to experiences due to school budgets, time constraints or other reasons, but my goal is to learn how technology can produce experiences online to simulate some of these ideas. Virtual worlds, like Second Life, www.secondlife.com, virtual museum tours, http://www.mnh.si.edu/panoramas/, hands on games or other internet experiences can be a way in which time and budget concerns could be resolved with technology opportunities for learning.

The Great Master’s Art

I hope to offer through this website, opportunities for students to become familiar with the great masters of art. Using virtual museum tours, hands-on activities and internet resources to inspire teachers and parents to expose their children or students to great art from the past.
