During the Renaissance Era there was an abundance of artistic wealth in Italy. The artists at the time were commissioned by the pope to portray religious stories for the grand churches in Rome.  Look for the use of linear perspective which gives the illusion of depth and distance along with religious subject matter.  The renewed interest in the ancient Roman and Greek culture, spurred the artists to depict classical human and realistic figures with the use of detail to light and shadows to ale the subjects look solid.
