Project Statement

In this project, I created my own personal sketchbook with swappable covers designed for multipurpose use. By examining the facets of a sketchbook, I could deduce what I wanted mine to be and how I wanted it to function. Toward the end of the project, many things seemed to go wrong with my product. However, by examining the design problems that had arisen, I was able to retest some major aspects and approach them with real solutions and come out the other end with a sketchbook that makes me happy, and I look forward to using it for the remainder of this semester.

Reflection

I made a very big mistake in not fully understanding the design challenges I would be creating by implementing magnets and not testing as much as I should’ve. I thought my design was easy and doable and, for the most part, it was. However, I should have done more research into my materials and their ability to be laser cut and etched. Approaching the sketchbook wasn’t very difficult and it was really interesting to get to fully examine my problems with a particular thing and then spend time designing solutions! Engaging with something that way taught me a lot about the design process in general and how a designer can flip flop between stages of the process and that it’s okay to do that. My redesign of the book is all of the functions I wanted in the first place, and I am very happy with how I reinvented the design I’m actually really glad that I ran into such a bump in the road with making this because it taught me so much about myself and my abilities as well as my flaws and shortcomings.
