Project Statement

In this project, I constructed a composition that emphasized a sense of depth through paper layering techniques. Using greyscale cardstock, I visualized the familiar feeling of “insecurity”. I wanted to capture what insecurity can feel like to an individual in a way that is understandable and tragic in a way. Each layer features different hands and faces, meant to represent the greatest symptom of insecurity being that you feel you’re being attacked in a way. As if people are pointing at you and your flaws, reaching out with ill intent.

Reflection

Overall, I’m happy with the way this turned out. Getting the layers to be spaced out was a bit of a struggle and it took some thinking to ensure that they were spaced out the way I want them to be. I think I could’ve spaced each layer out, even more, to create more shadow and darken the space between them to increase that feeling of depth. Some decisions with this I made very last minute but I think they turned out well. I do realize I should’ve probably explored more with some of the ideas I had. My biggest concern was creating the shapes and all the ways you could do that. For example, the middle hand is formed through 2 layers instead of just one. That is something I wish I explored more mainly cause it can create a really cool effect where you know the shape comes together but it exists between different layers, giving it a feeling of dimension.
