Project Statement

My main objective for this project was to use perspective to convey the principle of hierarchy. By using difference in perspective I show the importance of the land marks. For example, Hayes Hall is the destination, so it appears to protrude past the rest of the map. While the Oval in real space is obviously larger than Hayes Hall, it is not the most important land mark, so proportionally it is smaller than it is realistically. By using the sensory element of smell, I draw the viewer into the map, by marking the path taken with vanilla extract. The path taken leads to Mirror Lake Eatery, where I love their vanilla milkshakes, so to demonstrate my experience more dynamically, the viewer can smell the same scent of vanilla while walking. To convey the warmth of the sun, the page is covered in a light wash of warm golden yellow. Only one color was permitted to be used for this project, so yellow is the most appropriate due to the warmth and comfort of the walk.

Reflection

From this project, I explored thinking in different ways about how to execute my ideas and how to use size and line weight to convey hierarchy. In the future, I will further explore detailing, stenciling, and shading, and how each of those strategies can help me communicate more effectively. Additionally, I will employ more dramatic shifts in line weight to emphasize the hierarchy of the land marks. I loved this project and believe I conveyed my chosen path accurately and in a visually stimulating way. My use of vanilla extract draws in the sense of smell, but I want to make this stronger, to avoid fading over time or having to get too close to the page to smell it. I want to learn techniques to convey the texture of water and grass more accurately, or in a similar style to that of the stenciled trees. Each landmark has significance to me, so including the reason they are included is something I would like to work with in similar future projects.
