Ingredients
- 1 small yellow onion, chopped
- 1 carrot, chopped
- ½ green pepper, chopped
- 1 lb lean (>90% lean) ground beef or turkey
- 8 oz. canned no salt-added tomato sauce
- 15 oz. canned no salt-added whole tomatoes, crushed
- 8 oz. canned mushrooms, rinsed and drained
- 3 Tbsp barbecue sauce
- pepper to taste
- 5 whole-wheat buns
Instructions
- Wash fresh vegetables and chop.
- Sauté onion, carrot, green pepper and ground beef/turkey in a frying pan over medium heat until meat is thoroughly cooked, approximately 5 minutes.
- Add tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, mushrooms, barbecue sauce, and pepper and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer covered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Uncover and cook for an additional 3 minutes or until thick.
- Serve on buns.
