Sustainable and Resilient Tanzanian Community
Participants in Sustainable and Resilient Tanzanian Community (SRTC) will have the opportunity to apply community development theory to a hands-on, international service-learning experience aimed at engendering long-term change in the Same District of Tanzania. For 3 weeks during summer term, students participating in this program will contribute initial development work towards a long-term community partnership that seeks to improve the social and physical wellbeing of residents of the rural Marwa village. SRTC aims to improve sustainable water access and overall water quality for residents in collaboration with fellow OSU students, Marwa community members and non-governmental organizations to improve water access and quality for residents of Marwa village. Participants will also learn about wildlife conservation during hikes and safari at Kilmanjaro National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. For dynamic updates on SRTC’s progress, visit the program’s Facebook page.
Accepted students will enroll in total of six credit hours in order to participate in this program. During Spring semester, students are required to enroll in three credit hour pre-departure course, ENR 5790.11, aimed at providing basic Swahili skills and context regarding Tanzanian and Maasai culture, history, policy, ecology, and culture. SRTC travels to Marwa at the same time as its sister Civil, Environmental, & Geodetic Engineering program and may collaborate during the pre-departure course. Participants will spend 3 weeks in Tanzania and earn 3 credit hours, ENR 5797.11, during their in-country experience.
