End of Year Review

While inside the classroom, I learned how much I love learning about science.  Learning about how the world around us works increases my passion for wanting to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.  In addition, it has made me feel more confident about wanting to become a veterinarian in the future.

While outside the classroom, I have learned that there are many different views on different topics.  Being in college was really the first time that I had met a person that had completely different viewpoints than my own.  While this was very difficult at first, I learned to appreciate the many types of people that are all around me and to listen and try and understand their opinions.  While I may not agree, that doesn’t mean that I should be disrespectful towards them.  By listening, I may learn new things about a subject, and it may change my own opinion.  I have learned just how important it is to be open to other people because every person has different experiences.

Throughout this year, I learned that I am much better at going out and taking advantage of different opportunities than I thought.  In high school, I wasn’t really looking to be a leader.  I just wanted to get good grades, play volleyball, and swim.  I was afraid to go and do something more like lead a club.  However, this semester when I joined the leadership council, I realized that I loved being able to help make decisions and lead events.  It taught me that if I take risks and try something new, I might find something that I really love.

I have two favorite memories of this past year.  The first was going on the camping trip.  I have lived in Ohio my whole life and never knew that it had caves and rock structures like Ash Cave.  I got to meet a lot of new people and form new friendships while getting to spend time outside.  My second memory was my first time at a horse show.  I loved being able to be around so many people who love and care for horses everyday and want to learn all they can about them.  In addition, getting to show for the first time was something I will never forget.  It was so exciting!

I am looking forward to getting to show next year and getting to learn more about horsemanship.  I have already learned so much about horses this year and becoming a better horseback rider.  I want to continue learning so that I can have a horse of my own someday.  I also want to become a sitter for 4-Paws next year and help train future service dogs.  I have always wondered if there was a way to get involved with this, and for the first time I see that it is possible for someone like me to get involved with training dogs to become service dogs.  I am also looking forward to being part of the leadership council in the scholar’s program for another semester and becoming a better leader for such an amazing program.

Columbus to-do List Part 2

For the second part of my Columbus to-do list, I decided to go to the Quarter Horse Congress.  I got to watch some of the horses that were showing warm up.  Riders of all kinds were in the arena, riding both English and Western.  It was so much fun to watch them!  I also got to explore the many shops that were at the Congress.  There were so many items for showing and taking care of horses!  Everything from beautiful show shirts to saddles for both showing and everyday use.  I especially loved looking at the horse trailers because I had never seen what they looked like from the inside before.  I was also surprised that there was an area were breeders went to sell their puppies.  It was so much fun to get to pet them and say hello!  I would recommend this event!  It was amazing!

I also went to the Bert Kreischer show at the Palace Theatre.  Burt Kreischer is a comedian who travels around the country putting on shows.  He does not travel to Columbus regularly, but I thought I would include it because it is one of the many great shows that happen in Columbus.  It is was both amazing and hilarious.  I don’t remember the last time I had laughed that hard.  I was very glad that I went and would recommend going if he comes back to Columbus.

My favorite experience was the Quarter Horse Congress because I love horses and it makes me happy that such a large event is dedicated to showing off the incredible partnership that has formed between the horses and their riders.  I also loved exploring all the great shops.  It made me want to have my own horse even more so I can enter myself!  🙂

I learned that Columbus has so much to offer, all you have to do is look around.  There are so many great things to do and see, and I am excited that I got to explore such an amazing city.  Doing this project has allowed me to see a few of the many things that go on in Columbus every day!  In addition, this project has made me want to explore some of the other festivals that go on in Columbus.  I also want to visit some other dessert shops in Columbus because I love to try new desserts.  Overall, I am glad that I got to do this project, and I can’t wait to learn more about Columbus.

Alumni Interview

Today, I interviewed Kayla, an E&R Scholar Alumni.  She is currently a third year at OSU studying Chemical Engineering, and she was able to give me a lot advise about my major because we are both in a STEM field.  She told me about her classroom experience her first year of college, and also about her time in E&R Scholars.  The advise she gave that stuck out to me was to enjoy my freshman year, and really get to know the people around me and in my scholars program.  She told me about Organic Chemistry, a class that I will have to take next Fall, which really helped to calm my nerves about the class.  In addition, she told me that while the classes do get harder, since you have already built a foundation, they are very manageable.  I learned that the problem solving skills that I learn in class can be more important the material itself.  It is important to build a foundation for learning that can serve you in the future.  In terms of the professional world, I learned about how important research can be when trying to find a job, and for interviewing, make sure that you can talk about everything on your resume.  In addition, think about different stories that you can use if they ask for examples.  I hope to apply what I have learned in classes and in life as well.  Now that I have a general overview of Organic Chemistry, I know I will feel more comfortable walking into class for the first time.  In addition, I will make sure to work on my problem solving skills, and I will make sure to get research experience in a lab.  Overall, this was a great experience, and I hope we get to speak again!

About Me

My name is Amelia.  I am a  first year student at OSU.  I am a Biochemistry Major.  While these three sentences contain the information that many people want to know about me, it hardly tells people about who I am as a person.  I grew up in a suburb in Cincinnati with my mother, father, brother, and sister.  From the time I was little, I knew that I loved animals, and wanted to spend my whole life taking care of them.  I can’t even remember the day that I decided when I wanted to be a vet, but from that day on, animals have become the center of my life.  Every project I did where I could choose the topic had something to do with animals.  One of my favorite things to do is to read books upon books about animals and their behavior.  However, I know that becoming a vet is a long time goal for me, so I focus on the present.  My goal right now is to get at least a 3.7 GPA, to get as much experience with animals as possible, and to become a leader that I can be proud of.  In addition, my love of animals has inspired me to love and preserve the environment in which they live.  I have always loved nature, but I honestly did not realize it until high school.  As I began to hear more and more about environmental issues, I became angry with how much plastic and garbage goes into the ocean, and how many trees are being cut down.  I wanted to be able to do something about it.  In addition, I love being outside.  I love just how beautiful and how peaceful nature can be, and how it takes me away from the busy life that I lead.  I am so excited to be able to explore the outdoors this year, and I can’t wait to see what my future holds!

Columbus to-do List Part One

In Columbus, there are so many fun things to do!  This semester, I have chosen to complete the Ice Cream and Desserts list.  I am looking forward to trying all the different kinds of desserts that Columbus has to offer.  I personally love ice cream, and enjoy getting to try and enjoy many different brands and flavors!  I also love getting to try new kinds of desserts that I have never had before.  In addition, to get to some of these places I am going to have to take a bus.  I am hoping to learn how to use the busing system.  I come from an area with no public transportation, so I am hoping to learn how to navigate on my own.  I also want to actually go into downtown Columbus and Short North to see what they are like!

The one place that I have been to on this list is Graeter’s Ice Cream.  Graeter’s Ice Cream not only sells what in my opinion is the best ice cream on the planet, but also chocolates, candies, and other assorted desserts.  When I went for this experience, I got salted caramel ice cream without chocolate chips.  I love the ice cream that they make because it has such a deep, rich flavor that cannot be replicated anywhere else.  The seating was designed to look like your everyday ice cream parlor, but the ice cream added something greater to the overall atmosphere.  If you are an ice cream lover, I would definitely recommend trying out Graeter’s.  Granted, I am a bit biased because I have been going to several different Graeter’s since I was little, but there is a reason so many people love to go there.  Their ice cream is simply delicious.

About Me

Hello.  My name is Amelia.  My major is Biochemistry, and I am a freshman in college.  While these words answer many of the questions that people want to know about me, it only scratches the surface of who I am as a person.  I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio in a home with my mother, father, brother, and sister.  My whole life, I have wanted to be a vet.  I have had dogs around all my life and quickly realized I wanted animals to be at the center of my life.  I picked my major and clubs with the hope that I can gain the knowledge that will get me into vet school and make me a successful vet in the future.  In addition, I am a person who cares very deeply about the environment.  The beautiful landscapes, resources, and incredible wildlife should be preserved for the next generation.  I am always encouraging my family to turn off the lights when they leave a room and to recycle.  My favorite landscapes include the forest and mountains.  I love spending time outdoors skiing both water and snow, hiking, climbing, and running.  As a student, I love to learn things through seeing and doing.  I am a visual learner, but I also love to master new concepts by doing different things.  My favorite subject is sciences because it involves labs were you get to perform experiments and watch what happens.  In addition, science helps me understand the world around me.  It gives me more appreciation for the world we live in and what we can do to make it a better place.
