Alumni Interview

Today, I interviewed Kayla, an E&R Scholar Alumni.  She is currently a third year at OSU studying Chemical Engineering, and she was able to give me a lot advise about my major because we are both in a STEM field.  She told me about her classroom experience her first year of college, and also about her time in E&R Scholars.  The advise she gave that stuck out to me was to enjoy my freshman year, and really get to know the people around me and in my scholars program.  She told me about Organic Chemistry, a class that I will have to take next Fall, which really helped to calm my nerves about the class.  In addition, she told me that while the classes do get harder, since you have already built a foundation, they are very manageable.  I learned that the problem solving skills that I learn in class can be more important the material itself.  It is important to build a foundation for learning that can serve you in the future.  In terms of the professional world, I learned about how important research can be when trying to find a job, and for interviewing, make sure that you can talk about everything on your resume.  In addition, think about different stories that you can use if they ask for examples.  I hope to apply what I have learned in classes and in life as well.  Now that I have a general overview of Organic Chemistry, I know I will feel more comfortable walking into class for the first time.  In addition, I will make sure to work on my problem solving skills, and I will make sure to get research experience in a lab.  Overall, this was a great experience, and I hope we get to speak again!
