Two learning opportunities from the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching

“Open Educational Resources for Affordable Learning” Reading Group

 When: November 7, 2017 at 9:30am – 11:00am
Where: Barbie Tootle Room | Ohio Union

This reading group will meet on November 7, 14, 21, and 28. Join us as we discuss selections from two open digital books that explore the cost of higher education (“Paying the Price” by Sarah Goldrick-Rab) and how use of open educational resources is one strategy that instructors can employ to overcome financial barriers (“Open” by Rajiv Jhangiani & Robert Biswas-Diener). We are excited to team up with staff from ODEE as we explore the importance of providing affordable course material as a way to eliminate barriers for many of our students. Both books are both available for free and once you’ve registered, you will receive details on how to access them. Registration for the group is limited to 12 people.

Valuing the Cost: When Financial Responsibility Impacts Student Learning

When: November 15, 2017 at 3:00pm – 4:30pm
Where: 150 Younkin Success Center

Many of our students report that after paying for tuition, room and board, they cannot buy books or sometimes even food. About 15 percent of Ohio State students reported that they lacked reliable access to affordable, nutritious food from week to week. In this interactive performance-based workshop, participants will engage in discussion about how financial instability and food insecurity impact students in our classrooms. How can instructors consider these realities in course management, structure, and even content-building? InterACT is a theatre-based ensemble that uses interactive techniques to assist participants in developing success strategies and problem-solving common classroom scenarios.

CPD receives accreditation status from ACPE

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy’s Office of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has recently received ACPE Continuing Education Provider accreditation. This will allow CPD to offer continuing pharmacy education credit to any pharmacist in the country. Once courses are completed, the continuing education credit will be automatically loaded onto the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) monitor.

In order to gain accreditation status, CPD was required to complete an extensive self-study and application based on the ACPE Accreditation Standards of Practice for Continuing Pharmacy Education.

“We are excited for the opportunity to expand CPD’s reach across the country. We aim to create new education and training opportunities to advance the profession of pharmacy forward, while reinforcing the skills that are essential to current practice,” said Bella Mehta, director of Continuing Professional Development.

CPD will be launching approximately five online continuing education programs this fall. In addition, the group will launch a certificate program with online/live training programs on Pharmacy-Based Care of Underserved Populations with enrollment beginning September 30th. This program will help prepare pharmacists to be practice ready as the profession moves toward recognizing pharmacists as providers for care of the medically underserved. CPD is also working to develop community pharmacy leadership and administrative training courses through funding from Fisher Leadership Institute.

“We are proud that Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy will contribute to advancing knowledge for pharmacists across the country. We believe in lifelong learning and look forward to assisting pharmacists in developing and maintaining their skills, enhancing their professional practice, and supporting achievement of their career goals,” said Henry J. Mann, dean and professor of the College of Pharmacy.

NACDS, University of Pittsburgh Extend Test2LearnTMCommunity-Based Pharmacogenomics Certificate Program

NACDS, University of Pittsburgh Extend Test2LearnTMCommunity-Based Pharmacogenomics Certificate Program

Well-received community pharmacy certificate program expands national tour to include three new locations in North Carolina, California and Ohio

Arlington, Va. – Building on the positive outcomes and engagement in the initial phase of the Test2LearnTMCommunity-Based Pharmacogenomics Certificate Program, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, today announced plans to expand the national tour to three new locations: Duke University in Durham, N.C., Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy located in Irvine, Calif., and The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Pharmacogenomics is an emerging field of study that combines pharmacology and genomics to ensure that medications are used in a safe and effective manner based on a person’s genetic makeup. The certificate program is designed to enhance pharmacist skills to help to ensure that the right patient is getting the right medicine at the right dose using genetic test results.

NACDS and the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy adapted Test2LearnTM from an innovative University platform that enables students to learn by using real genetic data in highly-interactive exercises. The certificate program is comprised of online home study modules and in-person live components, including an optional activity for learners to undergo personal genomic testing. In addition to the in-person aspect of the program, pharmacist participants will also learn how to administer the training to others during the “train-the-trainer” component of the course.

“We are providing community pharmacy with an education program that trains pharmacists to improve patient outcomes through a more personalized and tailored approach to medicine,” said NACDS President & CEO Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE. “The inaugural Test2LearnTM tour generated a great deal of interest and positive feedback from participants and faculty, so we are delighted to be able to expand the tour to include additional locations in the Midwest, South and on the West Coast.”

Test2LearnTM teaches the principles of pharmacogenomics as well as its practical implications in disease states such as cardiology, oncology, neurology and infectious diseases, among others. It trains pharmacists to decipher genetic tests, translate that information, and make appropriate recommendations for the patient, including clinical decision making, interpretation of patient results, and counseling and collaboration with prescribers to help optimize patient medication regimens.

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a Practice-based Continuing Pharmacy Education activity, as defined by ACPE. The online home study module and the one-day live in-person module total approximately 20 credit hours of pharmacogenomics educational content. Program participants have the unique opportunity to use an anonymous genomic data set, or their own personal data, for the in-person educational module.

The first two-day event will occur April 10-11 at Duke University in Durham, NC, and subsequent tours will be April 27-28 at Chapman University, in Orange, Calif., and May 18-19 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Register on NACDS.org. Additional tour stops for 2017 will be announced later this spring. Faculty will include representatives of the University of Pittsburgh. Voluntary genetic testing is through the company 23andMe.
