CPD receives accreditation status from ACPE

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy’s Office of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has recently received ACPE Continuing Education Provider accreditation. This will allow CPD to offer continuing pharmacy education credit to any pharmacist in the country. Once courses are completed, the continuing education credit will be automatically loaded onto the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) monitor.

In order to gain accreditation status, CPD was required to complete an extensive self-study and application based on the ACPE Accreditation Standards of Practice for Continuing Pharmacy Education.

“We are excited for the opportunity to expand CPD’s reach across the country. We aim to create new education and training opportunities to advance the profession of pharmacy forward, while reinforcing the skills that are essential to current practice,” said Bella Mehta, director of Continuing Professional Development.

CPD will be launching approximately five online continuing education programs this fall. In addition, the group will launch a certificate program with online/live training programs on Pharmacy-Based Care of Underserved Populations with enrollment beginning September 30th. This program will help prepare pharmacists to be practice ready as the profession moves toward recognizing pharmacists as providers for care of the medically underserved. CPD is also working to develop community pharmacy leadership and administrative training courses through funding from Fisher Leadership Institute.

Student Voices: Brenda Shen’s Study Abroad Experience in Japan

There’s a first time for everything

In three short weeks, I gained a brief overview of both the many triumphs and shortcomings of the public health system in Japan. While the intricacies of many topics are left to be researched for me, the general overview of health topics in this course was simply life-changing. As a Pharmaceutical Science major who has not taken a course by the College of Public Health, it was a valuable opportunity to be able to firsthand witness the successes and failures of one of the world’s most renowned public health systems. The memory that will undoubtedly stick with me are the words of the family member at the itai-itai disease museum. From this experience, I truly realized that the actions people take may have horrendous, lingering effects on the wellbeing of an entire community. In this moment, I understood that it should be the duty of a nation’s public health system and as an aspiring physician and future health professional to prevent these outbreaks like Itai-Itai and Minamata disease. Tragedies like these two examples have shown me that government intervention and protective policies are necessary to defend the health of the public. These types of diseases are entirely preventable by cooperation of the local community and government. With this in mind, this course has taught me to not only think broadly but it has also kindled an interest in public health and policy. It has always been my goal to attend medical school and be a practicing physician scientist. I have always focused on internal qualities that related to becoming a compassionate doctor. However, I realized that I may also help many more individuals by becoming a physician educated on policy-making and its health effects on entire communities. In addition, future aspirations aside, this course has also taught me topics and skills that may be beneficial immediately in my undergraduate career. Every fall and spring, I am one of the presenters at international student orientations on health access at Ohio State. While I am only speaking about the health and drug access in the US, I believe that it is important to have a background on some members of my audience. There is no doubt in my mind having knowledge on a foreign nation’s health care will allow me to better explain topics and educate international students on our own system.

Furthermore, as I previously mentioned, learning about topics is certainly different that witnessing and experiencing them. This course has both taught and shown me the tenacity of people who have faced challenges and how they have overcome them with preparation and resiliency. I was particularly interested in reading the first-hand accounts of many health professional and relief workers in Hiroshima of 1945. To read about individuals, who were injured and exposed themselves, find the strength to continue their duties and jobs of saving lives during a hellish period was shocking. This theme of superior humility was once again pronounced as I heard about the doctor who worked his hardest to relieve the patient with itai-itai disease and the hospitals staff in Sendai during the horrific earthquake and tsunami. These are stories I will hold close to my heart as I continue to grow and develop into a doctor. To say the least, my first public health course being abroad was truly one of my undergraduate experiences that has been most valuable to me.

At the University of Tokyo, we were given the opportunity to listen to a number of lectures from their professors at their College of Public Health and our very own Ibaraki sensei! These talks ranged from discussions on suicide in Japan, the aging population, universal health coverage, water security, etc.

We had the opportunity to hear from a pharmacist at a center for public health in Adachi. Interestingly, it seems the role of pharmacist is vastly different in Japan than that of the United States. In Japan, the duties of pharmacist only include dispensing of medications with little role in actual patient care; in the US, medication managements and counseling have become staples the patient care process. In addition, pharmacists in Japan have no prescription power in terms of medication for patients. However, both in both countries they do have similar active roles regarding educational outreach on drug safety.

At the Adachi incineration plant, we were able to learn about how Tokyo is able to reduce the mass of landfill and dispose of their waste via other methods.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was hauntingly peaceful. The eyewitness accounts were invaluable lessons for humanity.

Public health aside, the Miyajimacho was one of the most beautiful destinations we visited. Along with a guardian population of deer, the entire island was surreal.

One of the last meals in Japan included the famous beef tongue of Sendai! 10/10 would recommend.

Brenda is active in many groups on campus including Pharmacy Ambassadors, a program in the College of Pharmacy that introduces refugees to the U.S. healthcare system. Students invited to apply for President’s Prize recognition

As graduating seniors this spring, Margaret Griffin of Cincinnati and KayMesha Knox, a Columbus native, learned they were the first-ever President’s Prize recipients. Each received a living stipend, startup funding and access to faculty mentors and other accomplished experts. Applications are being accepted through Friday (7/14) to be considered for President’s Prize recognition, which is bestowed on exceptional students who are committed to social change.

Pharmacy Refugee Program Recognized by Ohio State

The Ohio State University Office of Outreach and Engagement recently recognized the College of Pharmacy’s Pharmacy Ambassadors with the Emerging Community Engagement Award at the 2017 Engagement Recognition Awards Ceremony. Pharmacy Ambassadors is a program designed to introduce refugees in Central Ohio to the United States health care system..

Established in 2013, former students Helen Kim and Grace Kilbane collaborated with US Together and the Kroger Company to create a two ½ hour class, in which participants are introduced to the role of a pharmacist and over-the-counter and prescription medication classifications, taught how to read a pharmacy label and interpret directions, and are involved in hands-on interactive demonstrations with common pharmacy supplies such as teaspoon devices and prescription bottles. The program is offered using interpreters for non-native English speakers to facilitate communication and ensure understanding.

Ohio State College of Pharmacy’s global initiatives coordinator, Chelsea Pekny, PharmD, now leads the program; helping to organize and expand student groups and other organizations using the materials.

“Pharmacists are the most accessible health care professional,” said Pekny. “By utilizing their expertise within communities, we are able to introduce refugees to their pharmacists so they feel comfortable. This interaction opens up lines of communication and enables the pharmacist to addresses individual challenges.”

The Emerging Community Engagement Award was created to highlight programs that have demonstrated outstanding promise in community outreach and engagement that show the potential for long-term impact, achievement, and scholarship. Pharmacy Ambassadors has expanded to other immigrant and refugee organizations through the state, and information about Pharmacy Ambassadors has been shared through research posters, publications, and radio media. Collaborations with other colleges of pharmacy, healthcare organizations, and resettlement agencies give the program a promising future in helping to improve the health of refugees in the United States.

Stephen Myers, associate vice provost of Ohio State’s Office of Outreach and Engagement presented the award to Pharmacy Ambassadors.

“Navigating the U.S. health system can be very challenging for our refugee populations. Pharmacy students came together to solve this problem,” Myers said.

Assistant dean of outreach and engagement for the College of Pharmacy, Jennifer Rodis, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA, is excited for the growth of the program.

“Pharmacy Ambassadors aligns with the college’s mission of providing patient-centered care and transformative community engagement. It exemplifies the values of commitment to professionalism, diversity and inclusion, and creating meaningful and sustainable partnerships. This program, along with our engagement endeavors, is helping the College of Pharmacy make a positive impact on the health of people across the state,” Rodis said.

Pharmacy Ambassadors is continuing its growth and will soon be offering free educational materials through the College of Pharmacy website that the public can download for free.

Bhutanese-Nepali Neighbors: Photographs by Tariq Tarey

The history of the more than 20,000 Bhutanese-Nepali people in Columbus is rapidly becoming the history of Ohio. This exhibit consists of 30 photographs of members of the Bhutanese-Nepali community, taken by Tariq Tarey. Each photograph is accompanied by a narrative written by Doug Rutledge, which explains each individual’s history. The photographs emphasize the historic sequence of the Bhutanese-Nepali refugee experience; from living and working in Bhutan, to being forced to leave Bhutan, the experience of living in refugee camps in Nepal for 20 years or more, to resettlement in Columbus, finding jobs, buying homes and finally becoming American citizens.

Generation Rx Collaborative to Receive Student Group Award for Excellence in Community Service Programming

Columbus, Ohio – The Generation Rx Collaborative, a student group at Ohio State dedicated to medication safety and misuse prevention education, was named the 2017 recipient of the Student Group Award for Excellence in Community Service Programming by The Ohio State University Office of Engagement. The award will be presented during the annual Engagement Forum on May 3rd at the Ohio Union.

The Generation Rx Collaborative serves as a conduit through which several student groups in the College of Pharmacy work together to promote medication safety in the Central Ohio area and beyond. Through a variety of events they teach the public using Generation Rxresources. As of January 2017, the group has impacted over 36,000 people to help educate them about safe medication practices and the danger of the misuse of prescription medications.

The group has accomplished much this year. Highlights include contracting with the Columbus Blue Jackets to host a Generation Rx Night at Nationwide Arena, multiple presentations to students at Columbus City Schools, hosting a campus-wide candlelight vigil in remembrance of those that have lost their battle to addiction, holding biennial Drug-Take Back Days at the Wilce Student Health Center where nearly two hundred pounds of unused or unwanted medication were collected, and a collaboration with the Collegiate Recovery Community to host a Recovery Ally Training for student pharmacists to serve as patient advocates.

The Student Group Award for Excellence in Community Service Programming is presented by the Office of Student Life, Office of Outreach and Engagement, and the Office of Service-Learning to recognize student groups at The Ohio State University who have rendered exceptional outreach and/or engagement within Ohio’s communities through partnership with a community agency. This award is given to student group that have truly distinguished themselves through their efforts. The recipient of this award has made a significant contribution to our institution’s culture of engagement, further establishing and strengthening Ohio State’s commitment to supporting the communities we serve.

Rodis Recognized for Innovative Programming

Jennifer L. Rodis, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA, was recently presented with the Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Practice from the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) for her work with Partner for Promotion (PFP). The award was created to recognize an individual who has developed and/or implemented an innovative, original pharmacy program or service that is significant to their area of practice and was presented to Rodis at the APhA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.

Now in its twelfth year, PFP is a collaboration of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy faculty and students with community-based and health-system pharmacists to train and mentor students and pharmacists through implementation of sustainable advanced e-patient care services.

The model has been so successful that it has been expanded to six other colleges of pharmacy across the United States.

“It’s exciting that we are impacting communities in and around Ohio State,” said Rodis. “It’s even better that we can bring this longitudinal learning experience to pharmacy students across the country to help raise the level of education while also improving the lives of patients.”

PFP has been recognized previously with honors including the Distinguished Service-Learning Award from The Ohio State University, Innovative Teaching Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and a national Merit Award from the American Pharmacists Association.

Learning Opportunity – Roadmaps to equity: Opportunities for closing health gaps in Central Ohio

At this regional forum, held in Columbus, stakeholders will learn about Ohio’s overall health status and challenges, as well as health disparities and inequities experienced by minority and other priority populations across the state. Data and information will be shared from the 2017 HPIO Health Value Dashboard and the 2016 State Health Assessment.

Attendees will also learn about actionable, evidence-informed strategies that can be implemented by local health improvement initiatives to reduce health disparities and inequities, and move Ohioans towards health equity. The forum will also feature a facilitated panel discussion on the impact of health disparities and inequities in central Ohio.

The Roadmaps to equity forum series is held in partnership with the Ohio Commission on Minority Health and County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.

Registration begins at 12:30 pm, with program starting at 1:00 pm.
