Two learning opportunities from the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching

“Open Educational Resources for Affordable Learning” Reading Group

 When: November 7, 2017 at 9:30am – 11:00am
Where: Barbie Tootle Room | Ohio Union

This reading group will meet on November 7, 14, 21, and 28. Join us as we discuss selections from two open digital books that explore the cost of higher education (“Paying the Price” by Sarah Goldrick-Rab) and how use of open educational resources is one strategy that instructors can employ to overcome financial barriers (“Open” by Rajiv Jhangiani & Robert Biswas-Diener). We are excited to team up with staff from ODEE as we explore the importance of providing affordable course material as a way to eliminate barriers for many of our students. Both books are both available for free and once you’ve registered, you will receive details on how to access them. Registration for the group is limited to 12 people.

Valuing the Cost: When Financial Responsibility Impacts Student Learning

When: November 15, 2017 at 3:00pm – 4:30pm
Where: 150 Younkin Success Center

Many of our students report that after paying for tuition, room and board, they cannot buy books or sometimes even food. About 15 percent of Ohio State students reported that they lacked reliable access to affordable, nutritious food from week to week. In this interactive performance-based workshop, participants will engage in discussion about how financial instability and food insecurity impact students in our classrooms. How can instructors consider these realities in course management, structure, and even content-building? InterACT is a theatre-based ensemble that uses interactive techniques to assist participants in developing success strategies and problem-solving common classroom scenarios.
