2016 University Outreach and Engagement Recognition Awards Now Accepting Applications

The Offices of Outreach and Engagement, International Affairs, Service-Learning, Student Life, and Undergraduate Education have joined together to recognize faculty, staff, students, and community partners with the University Outreach and Engagement Recognition Awards program.  Awards will be given in the community engagement, international engagement, service-learning, staff, student, student group, and community partner categories.  A total of $21,000 will be awarded.  Applications are due Feb. 16, 2016.

New Blog Post: Addressing the Misuse of Prescription Drugs While Being in the “At-Risk” Population

Jason-anderson-1njpuyd-150x150As a fourth-year student practicing in the pharmacy, I see the face of addiction every week. The signs of drug addiction are no longer presented as shady drug deals in a dark alley but are now disguised as early refill requests for opioid pain medication and stimulant ADHD medications. The description of the stereotypical drug abuser has changed drastically over the last few years. For example, the highest rate of emergency department visits in 2011 related to drug misuse or abuse was between the age range 18-29. This, coincidentally, is the demographic of the college population. Fifty-one percent of these cases involved non-medical use of pharmaceuticals. The real question is this: how do we overcome these biological changes of addiction to alter prescription drug misuse behaviors?

Professor Donnie Sullivan was recently featured on “Wellness Wednesday” with Ann Fisher on WOSU to talk about the American Medical Association’s recent vote in favor of a ban that would stop direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs and medical devices.
