Pasture for Profit School Starts January 13

This coming year between January and March, 2021, the Pastures for Profit curriculum will be offered as a virtual course. One live webinar will be offered per month along with “work at your own pace” videos and exercises that accompany each webinar. The Pastures for Profit program is a collaboration between Ohio State University Extension, Central State University, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Ohio Department of Agriculture, and the Ohio Forage and Grasslands Council.

Each webinar will be offered live on Zoom beginning at 7 P.M. and feature three presentations 0ver a 90-minute span. Attendees will be able to interact with the speakers and ask questions in real time. Once registered, attendees will be granted access to the online course including the webinars and complementary resources. Participants that attend all three webinars will have the opportunity to earn a certificate of completion. Registered participants will also receive their choice of a curriculum binder or USB drive of the traditional course delivered via mail.

Webinar One– Core Grazing Education: 90 minutes, Wed., January 13 at 7 p.m.

Webinar Two– The Science of Grazing: 90 minutes , Wed., February 3 at 7 p.m.

Webinar Three– Meeting Grazing Goals: 90 minutes, Wed., March 3 at 7 p.m.

Cost of the course is $50, which includes the Pastures for Profit manual. Current and new members of the Ohio Forage and Grasslands Council are eligible for a $10 discount on registration. Register for the course by visiting https://afgc.org/ofgcwebinar.

Cow-Calf Management School will be held Monday Evenings Beginning January 18

What was originally planned as two on-farm face-to-face Cow-Calf Management Schools has now been redesigned as a series of 6 consecutive two hour webinar programs. While perhaps being less ‘hands-on” this webinar format now opens up the opportunity for more cattlemen throughout Ohio to participate. These presentations will occur on Monday evenings from 6 until 8 p.m. beginning on January 18, 2021. The first three evenings will be focused on producing quality forages while the final three will address reproduction and cow/calf management.

The Cow-Calf Management School series is being offered for free, and may be enrolled in as a one time package for all six programs. Find more details including registration under this registration link. Additional information will be available in the coming weeks.

Beef Quality Assurance for Producers

In the past three years, many beef producers in Ohio were certified in the Beef Quality Assurance program.  We encourage every producer to complete this certification and to participate in the program.  For those who entered into the program three years ago, the re-certification cycle will begin soon.

Online certification and recertification is available at https://www.bqa.org/beef-quality-assurance-certification/online-certifications.

At this time, it is strongly encouraged for those who have access to complete certification online. At OSU Extension, we will continue to monitor public health guidance, and when appropriate offer in-person certification opportunities.
