New Fertilizer Applicator Certification Class March 22, 6:00 PM

This class will meet the training requirement to obtain a fertilizer applicator certification from the Ohio Department of Agriculture in lieu of taking an exam.

Who needs a fertilizer certification?:

Fertilizer certification is required if you apply fertilizer (other than manure) to more than 50 acres used for agricultural production grown primarily for sale. If you have the co-op or other custom applicator make your fertilizer applications, you do not need the certification.

Beef Quality Assurance March 23

Are you selling beef animals to be harvested for meat and need to update your Beef Quality Assurance Certification?

The goal of the Ohio Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program is to increase the competitive base for marketing Ohio cattle. Beef Quality Assurance is a program to ensure that beef and dairy cattle are maintained in a manner which will result in a safe and wholesome beef product for the consumer.  The Ohio BQA program is set to meet or exceed the NCBA BQA Guidelines.

Attending this session will allow you to obtain the Ohio Beef Quality Assurance certificate or renew your existing certificate.  Certificates are good for three years.

Two sessions for certification will be available this winter and held at Muskingum Livestock Auction:

Ohio Cow-Calf Field Day to be held in Morgan County

The first of two statewide cow-calf field days will be held Monday, February 20 at Clemens Farms in Morgan County. The program will begin at 9:00 a.m. and focus on Optimizing Herd Fertility. Heifer development and cow-calf nutrition will be the primary topics of the day. OSU Extension Beef Cattle Field Specialist Garth Ruff, as well as a team of local county Extension professionals will teach the morning program. A hot lunch will follow, and the event will conclude with a farm tour looking at animal handling facilities and conservation practices. The morning program and lunch will take place in a heated farm shop but, dress appropriately for the afternoon activities.

Ohio Beef School Webinars Start January 11

The OSU Extension Beef Team is offering a Virtual Beef School with one webinar per month beginning next week and concluding in April. The first webinar features new OSU Extension Farm Management Field Specialist, Eric Richer who will be discussing agricultural input costs in 2023. The second topic of the evening will be Cattle Markets and Outlook presented by Garth Ruff, OSU Extension Beef Cattle Field Specialist at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

The next three sessions are as follows:

February 8 – Managing Reproduction. Presynchronization and Improving Fertility of Beef Cows: Alex Crist, OSU Animal Science and Synchronization and Natural Service: Dean Kreager, OSU Extension.

March 8 – Herd Health Management. Asian Longhorn Tick and Theileria: Dr. Risa Pesepane, OSU Vet Preventative Medicine and Managing Disease in 2023: Dr. Justin Kieffer, OSU Animal Sciences.

April 12 – Beef Team Round Table – Ask Questions and Discuss Answers with OSU Extension Beef Team Members

Ohio Beef Day coming to Muskingum County July 16

Field days have long been a great educational tool used to show farmers new technologies and management practices. OSU Extension is pleased to announce the return of a statewide Ohio Beef Cattle Field Day and Tour. It has been several years since an Ohio Beef Field Day has been held, and the program will make it reappearance in Muskingum County on Saturday July 16, 2022.

Pre-registration for the program is required and can be completed online at go.osu.edu/2022beefday by July 7. The program fee is $10 per person to cover costs. An information folder, refreshments, lunch, and Beef Quality Assurance certification will be provided to all attendees. More detail will be forthcoming as the date approaches but in the meantime if there are any questions regarding the program contact Garth Ruff, Beef Cattle Field Specialist at ruff.72@osu.edu or 740-305-3201.

We hope to see you in Muskingum County on July 16!
