CME Webcast Teaches on Common Poisonings and Toxidromes.  In this session, learners will review the epidemiology of poisonings across the lifespan, with an emphasis on recent trends. We will introduce a practical framework for evaluating the poisoned patient and review common toxidromes relevant to clinical practice. Participants will develop their skills in recognizing key signs of toxicity to initiate timely, evidence-based management.

Today’s toxicological landscape reflects our modern world and while natural toxins persist, synthetic drugs, household chemicals, and pharmaceutical overdoses dominate emergency department presentations.

For this program on common poisonings and toxidromes, we’ve invited an Emergency Medicine expert. Dr Christopher Gaw is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, he is also an injury prevention researcher with expertise in toxicology and public health.

On-line Education Series Teaches On Common Poisonings

OSUWexnerbloglogo2014 On-line Education Series Teaches On Common Poisonings. The American Association of Poison Control Centers manages a 24-hour hotline that is staffed by healthcare professionals with training in toxicology. Each year, U.S. poision control centers get more than 2 million calls about poison exposures, that works out to 1 poisoning every 15 seconds. Although poisonings still are most common in children between the ages of 1 and 3 years old, poisonings can and do occur in people of all ages. Therefore, it is important for all physicians who provide clinical care to patients to be familiar with the common causes of poisoning. Joining our webcast today to update you about poisoning is Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Jennifer Yee.
