The Ohio State University: College of Arts and Sciences

Katie Grammenidis

Katie Grammenidis explored aspects of Greek culture with the help of her family and knowledge from professors.

In her second broadcast, she discusses the significance and tradition around the concept of the evil eye (to mati) with interviews from her grandmother, her mother, and Dr. Timothy Gregory, a professor at Ohio State.

The history behind the concept of “the evil eye”, is the belief that a glare of negative intentions will inflict a curse upon the receiver. Negative emotions can evoke the evil eye, and the curse will cause bad events to occur to the receiver, such as a series of unfortunate events or a headache.
