Modern Greek ρύπανση ("pollution") derives from Ancient Greek ῥυπαίνω ("dirty," "contaminate"), from ῥύπος ("filth") — hence also Modern Greek ρύπος ("pollutant").
ῥύπος is first attested at Odyssey 6.93, when Nausicaa's slave girls wash all her dirty laundry (ῥύπα πάντα).
