κοιτάζω

Shipp on the verb κοιτάζω

ΛΚΝ:  “μσν. κοιτάζω < αρχ. κοιτάζω (κοίτη) `πάω στο κρεβάτι, στρατοπεδεύω΄, η αλλ. της σημ. από την εικόνα του φρουρού που έχει την κοίτη του (κρεβάτι) κοντά στη σκοπιά του””

There is another spelling that one can find for this verb, κυττάζω, though it may be outdated or not very common now.  That spelling was based on the etymology advocated by Hatzidakis, namely from Ancient Greek κυπτάζω ‘keep stooping, go poking about’ (just as the κοιτάζω spelling is based on the etymology from earlier ‘put to bed’ (< κοίτη ‘marriage-bad’)).  ‘poke about’ is maybe not an improvement on the semantic side, but it is a viable alternative (though I am not crazy about having to assume –πτ– > –ττ-).–BDJ
