We invite you all to attend the Job Talk for Dr. Tanya Middleton, Counselor Education, Clinical Mental Health and Addictions Specialist Tenure Track Search Candidate. The Job Talk will be held on Monday, April 1 at 9:30 am in 200A Ramseyer Hall or Zoom. Attached is the Job Talk flyer and Dr. Middleton’s CV. Dr. Middleton’s talk is titled, “Culturally Responsive Protective Factors for African American Counselor Educators: A Phenomenological Study.”
This presentation will discuss a phenomenological investigation designed to articulate the educational journey into counselor education for African Americans. A dozen current professors in counseling education were interviewed. Utilizing constructivism, fellow researchers and I aimed to construct meaning from their experiences and identify protective factors for African Americans aspiring to enter the field and diversify the professoriate. Analysis of those experiences yielded four main themes corresponding with a collectivistic approach. Themes were contextualized using the seven principles of Nguzo Saba, which resonate with a celebration of community and togetherness (Kwanzaa, n.d.) and can be used to aid in developing African American counseling students. Suggestions for supporting this underrepresented population are offered. The Zoom link for the job talk is below.
Students also have the opportunity to meet with the candidate on Monday, April 1 at 2:30 pm with on Zoom. |
