Leadership Programs

Faculty within the College of Medicine serve as leaders in many different capacities. Whether they maintain a formal leadership role; manage a lab; educate residents, fellows, and students; or participate as an active member of a team, FAME provides support for acquiring critical competencies to excel within these roles. FAME offers a combined approach of one-session programming paired with both the Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) and the FAME Unites Engaged Leaders (FUEL) cohort programs. These courses aim to improve leadership skills by helping participants to increase self-awareness and emotional intelligence; recognize their strengths, challenges, and values as leaders; develop their ability to initiate and lead change efforts and build high-performing teams; and strengthen their relational skills to generate and effectively communicate mutually beneficial solutions that build consensus and resolve conflict.

Cohort Programs

Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI)

This 10-month program will help train faculty in the necessary competencies to become principled leaders. Participants can expect to elevate self-leadership skills by exhibiting emotional intelligence and recognizing strengths, challenges and values as a leader; strengthen stewardship skills by developing the ability to initiate and lead change efforts; and improve relational skills by formulating mutually beneficial solutions that build consensus and resolve conflict. FLI is open to all faculty members in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences and is offered once each year (beginning in the fall).

FUEL is a 5-month cohort program designed to enhance knowledge in leadership with an emphasis on building and developing more effective teams. FUEL is open to all faculty members in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences and is offered twice each year (once in the fall and once in the spring).

Which program is right for me?

FUEL (FAME Unites Engaged Leaders) and FLI (Faculty Leadership Institute) are both highly-valuable leadership cohorts offered by FAME that are designed to help faculty develop necessary leadership skills in their fields. Both programs are led by subject matter experts and experienced practitioners who deliver sessions that bridge evidence-based strategies to lead with practical applications, exercises, and discussion. After successful completion of either program, participants will receive a program certificate and the ability to stand out on their teams and departments with specialized leadership skills.

FUEL is a shorter program (5-month cohort) that is laser-focused on developing and leading effective teams. While it is not a pre-requisite for FLI, FUEL can be a great starting point for faculty who are looking to enhance their leadership skills.

FLI is a longer and more intensive program (10-month cohort), that focuses on leadership development across a more diverse array of topics and activities, including teambuilding, communication, leadership coaching, strategy, change management, and more. FLI is a greater time commitment with more required assignments, including the development of a final leadership project.
