Course Description: This is a conversational Cantonese language course for speakers of Mandarin, and is open to both advanced learners of Mandarin Chinese and native speakers of Mandarin Chinese. The course aims to develop basic skills in speaking and listening comprehension in the Cantonese variety of Chinese, to enable the learners to function successfully in Cantonese-speaking settings using Cantonese as their primary language.
Note: Conversational Cantonese has been proposed as a new, two-course sequence:
- Chinese 4301. Conversational Cantonese for Mandarin Speakers I
- Chinese 4302. Conversational Cantonese for Mandarin Speakers II
The initial offering of conversational Cantonese — the first time in OSU’s history in offering Cantonese — took place in Autumn Semester 2013, with Tan Yutian and Tsui Tsz-Him as the co-instructors, Chen Litong assistiing as course developer, and Professor Marjorie Chan as faculty supervisor. Prior to a permanent, formal course for Cantonese, the Autumn 2013 course used Chinese 4194, a Group Studies course, to offer that semester’s topic, “Conversational Cantonese for Mandarin Speakers.” The new course number, Chinese 4301, formally implemented at the Registrar on 2 December 2014, was used for the first time in Spring Semester 2015. Our aim is to be able to offer the two-course sequence — Chinese 4301 and 4302 — on a regular basis, with potential extension to offering them as distance-learning courses to other CIC institutions.
