MashUp

Full Composition

Project Statement

With this project, I became much more proficient in Adobe Illustrator. While I already had some general knowledge of the interface, this challenged me to explore more advanced features such as Extrude and Bevel and creating isometric letters. I also learned to transfer documents between Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop in order to maximize my use of effects. The concept of this project, incorporating my made-up word into a digital art piece, was challenging for me. However, I rose to the challenge by using a word that I was excited to portray. I used pink as my second color, and while it is not complimentary to blue, it stands out just enough against it without being too garish. I brought in shades of grey to show depth on the sailboat, which makes the composition more detailed and dynamic. Additionally, I used the drop shadow feature in Illustrator to show the distance between the hull of the boat and the water on the right side of the composition, which helps communicate space within the piece.

Reflection

In the future, I want to try a different style of approach, as well as use more variation in the shades of colors allowed for emphasis and depth. With more details, I think I could portray movement more than I already am, which would be beneficial to the composition and make it more dynamic. With my knowledge of Illustrator after completing this project, I am confident I could increase the effectiveness of this design. Rather than having the overall illustration being the focal point of the composition, I would shift the focus to the actual letter forms of the word and build off of that. Within the contours of the letters I would create my illustration. This project came from a different angle than I have worked with in the past. While I struggled with the concept of bringing together the design and the word visually, my definition and portrayal of it was successful.
