Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest, which lies within the Vinton Furnace State Forest, is one of 22 experimental forests operated by the U.S. Forest Service in the Northeast and Midwest.  Scientists have been conducting studies on the Vinton Furnace since the early 1950’s.  Come learn about some of those early studies that helped shape forest management practices across the eastern United States as well as other ongoing research.  “The 2nd Friday Series” program on “Research at the Vinton Experimental Forest” will inform woodland owners and enthusiasts of the research being done to help understand SE Ohio’s forests and keep them healthy and sustainable.  Some of the topics and activities covered in this workshop include:

  •  Learn how historical land use shaped the current forests of SE Ohio and what future forests may look like
  • Visit USFS forest management research sites that were established as early as 1952 and the lessons learned
  • Learn about how fire and harvesting can help sustain oak forests.  Tour active prescribed fire and timber harvesting research sites
  • Learn about  current and past wildlife research  on species ranging from insect pollinators and salamanders to bobcats and golden eagles
  • Learn about the interconnections of forest management practices, forest vegetation, and wildlife.  See the actual research experiments up close

“Research at the Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest” and the “2nd Friday Series” are sponsored by the Education and Demonstration Subcommittee of the Vinton Furnace State Forest with support from the ODNR-Divisions of Forestry and Wildlife, US Forest Service, Vinton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ohio State University Extension, The National Wild Turkey Federation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Hocking College, Glatfelter and Ohio’s SFI Implementation Committee.

“Research at the Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest” will take place near McArthur, Ohio at the Vinton Furnace State Forest.   This class is October 10 from 9 am to 3:30 pm.  Most of the program will take place outside so dress appropriately.  A registration fee of $10 will include lunch and program materials.

Please RSVP by calling 740-596-5212 (OSU Extension Vinton County) or emailing Dave at apsley.1@osu.edu by October 6th.
