Shape Grammar: Process

Research

Notes I took for myself to better understand the elements and principles of design.

Exercises

As we first started to tackle this project, we were asked to create many different iterations by combining different sizes of squares, triangles, and circles to create new shapes.

Shape Finding

In this exercise we were asked to create four compositions with the shapes that we discovered. We had to create a static and dynamic composition using a geometric shape as well as a static and dynamic composition using a curvilinear shape that you created. As I was making these images, I focused on the design principles of movement and balance. For both static images I used balance and for both dynamic images I used movement.

Iterations

My first Iterations done to see what direction I wanted to take. My main focus was creating compositions that revolved around the Design principle of movement.

Once I decided which composition I thought was the strongest, I played around with different ways I could manipulated it.

Productions

Left Image (Digital), Right Image (By hand).
For my final project the main design principle that I focused on and wanted to show was movement. As you look at the composition, the shapes made from triangles and squares force your eyes to move throughout the composition. There are also other supporting design principles in the composition as well including repetition and contrast. For the final project, the term I used to define it was “Directional”.
As I worked through this project I learned that sometimes simple is more effective. In many of my first iterations throughout every step, I had to take a step back and reevaluate my compositions by simplifying them and by breaking them down. I was also able to focus on my craft more by doing one of the compositions by hand. I focused on my cutting skills and new ways to make sure that all my shapes would be equal.
