Assistant Professor of Reading/Literacy Education

The Child Development, Literacy and Special Education Department in the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University seeks qualified candidates to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the Literacy Education Program.

We are seeking applicants who have expertise in teaching and an active research agenda to join our collaborative team. The successful applicants will be appointed to a full-time nine-month position to begin August 2024 with the possibility of summer teaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties include teaching, research, and service. Specifically, faculty will:

  • Actively engage in work consistent with Appalachian State University’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027.
  • Teach undergraduate courses (e.g., “Science of Literacy”; “Literacy Methods in Elementary Grades”) at the Boone and Hickory campus sites and graduate courses (e.g., “Teaching Beginning Readers and Writers”; “Reading Assessment and Correction”) at campus sites and online;
  • Teach, mentor, and collaborate with preservice teacher candidates, in-service teachers, and doctoral students;
  • Actively engage in scholarly work;
  • Engage in service to the program, department, college, university, and profession;
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the program, department, and university;
  • Actively engage with teachers and students in laboratory school settings and/or other field-based sites;
  • Serve on and chair doctoral committees;
  • Advise graduate students.
