The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a non-tenure track, Teaching Faculty position in the Elementary Education program.

This position is housed within the Department of Curriculum & Instruction in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. The University of Wisconsin-Madison occupies ancestral Ho-Chunk land, a place their nation has called Teejop (day-JOPE) since time immemorial. We recognize and respect the inherent sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk and the 12 First Nations within the boundaries of the state of Wisconsin. Their collective legacy of self-determination in the face of colonization, resistance, and resilience is taught and honored in the Elementary Education Program, which represents one of many collaborative acts to create a better future together.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
1. Teach undergraduate courses in the Elementary Education Program as needed (each course counts as 25% of a full workload). In the mathematics education area this would consist of courses focused on pedagogical content knowledge and methods for teaching mathematics.

2. Teach seminar(s) associated with a clinical field component of the elementary education program, as needed (each seminar counts as 25% of a full workload). This entails:
a. Planning and teaching seminars associated with the practicum and student teaching experiences.
b. Supervising and mentoring field supervisors of students in the seminar.
c. Tracking teacher candidates performance and progress and supporting them in completing their teacher education final performance assessment.

3. Supervise teacher candidates in their field placements as needed (supervising 6-7 teacher candidates (or 4-5 student teachers) would count as 25% of a full workload).

4. Attend meetings and serve on committees related to the elementary education program as needed (this counts as 25% of a full workload). Examples of such work include collaborating with the Teacher Education Center to recruit and support cooperating teachers, participating in Elementary Education program design meetings and collaborating with faculty on continuous program improvement.

Responsibilities:

Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.

  • 10% Works with faculty to identify and develop new methods of advancing instruction in the discipline
  • 15% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 15% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of these techniques
  • 25% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 10% Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • 5% Assists in development of grant proposals for funding of model instruction programs
  • 15% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • 5% May make presentations to faculty and to staff members on instructional programs and techniques

We seek a nationally recognized scholar who is well-versed in the research and practices of the discipline, including evidence-based approaches to teaching foundational literacy and preparing educators who are highly skilled to use these practices in educational contexts. We are particularly interested in individuals with an active research agenda and a history of external funding, strong teaching skills, and a record of engaged collaborative service with faculty, field-based partners, and state agencies.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that include:

  • Maintaining an active research agenda, securing external funding, publishing scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals, maintain state and national/international visibility.
  • Co-leading curricular revision and program development in evidence-based literacy practices and literacy instruction with faculty and field-based partners.

  • Engaging in service and outreach activities at the college, university, regional, state, national and/or international levels.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in academic scholarship, including grant writing, and conducting and publishing research in elementary literacy education (e.g., early literacy acquisition, oral language development, literacy with English learners/multilingual learners, writing instruction, teacher education in literacy).
  • Teach undergraduate courses in TEAL’s Elementary Teacher Education Program using face-to-face and online delivery methods (both synchronous and asynchronous); teach graduate courses as assigned.
  • Chair and serve on graduate student committees.
  • Develop partnerships with schools to facilitate research and provide programs supporting elementary literacy education.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching and working with a broad range of students with various educational goals and needs.

Position Description
We are seeking a faculty member with commitments to advancing the field of equity and justice-based STEM Education. This includes research that expands perspectives and ideas, utilizes and builds on critical theoretical and methodological approaches, and demonstrates expertise in critical epistemic foundations that challenge and reimagine dominant, Eurocentric approaches to STEM education. Candidates could take on a variety of specific research directions and inquiries within STEM education across a variety of levels (e.g., systemic, structural, institutional). We are most interested in candidates invested in advancing research on the social constructs that impact STEM access such as identity, socialization, racialization, and more. Additionally, we especially encourage applicants with commitments to reclaiming Indigenous, or other non-dominant epistemologies in STEM, that draw from asset-based and culturally sustaining, justice-oriented theoretical foundations.

We welcome applications with any area of research in STEM equity and justice, especially focused on the populations we serve at UCR and in the Inland Empire, and that go beyond naming lack of representation. Particular research focus that candidates might engage in include, but are certainly not limited to:

Ethno-STEM (e.g., ethnomathematics, land education, decolonization)

Critical and race-focused theories in STEM Education (e.g., anti-blackness, critical race theory, feminist epistemologies)

STEM effective, engaged, and culturally sustaining teaching and learning for historically marginalized populations (e.g., women, youth of color, linguistically diverse students, neurodiverse students, LGBTQ+ students)

System-wide analyses, practices, and policies that structurally advance race and gender equity and justice in STEM
