The School of Education at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz is pleased to announce searches for two tenure-track faculty positions in Literacy Education, one at the level of Assistant Professor, and one at the level of either Assistant or Associate Professor. We are seeking colleagues with experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: Literacy Assessment & Diagnosis; Early Childhood & Childhood Literacy Instruction; Literacy Professional Development & Coaching; Digital Literacies & Multimodal Practices; Critical Literacies; Young Adult & Children’s Literature: and/or Literacy Instruction for Multi-Lingual/Multi-Cultural Learners. Duties at the Assistant and Associate Professor Levels:

  • Teach and advise students in the graduate Literacy Education program, as well as advise students in an undergraduate teacher preparation program. The regular teaching load is three 3-credit courses a semester (or the equivalent).
  • Contribute to scholarship in literacy education through research, publications, and presentations at regional, national, and international meetings.
  • Provide service to the department, university, and local community by serving on School of Education and University committees, continue and establish partnerships with local school districts, and regularly contribute to curriculum and professional development activities with and for teacher candidates.

Additional Duties at the Associate Level:

  • Coordinate the graduate Literacy Education program. Examples of responsibilities include scheduling courses, recruiting and accepting graduate students, and collaborating with staff, part-time faculty, and graduate assistants. The graduate program coordinator receives release time for this work.

Assistant Professor of Literacy Education-Reading and Language Arts Education

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of literacy education with an emphasis on reading and language arts education beginning August 2024. 

This full-time position is responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Elementary/ Middle School teacher preparation program, research, and service to the university and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise and include literacy emphasizing reading, writing, and language arts. 

JOB DETAILS:

The successful candidate will be able to teach literacy instruction, literacy assessment, and literacy theory and research as part of the undergraduate and graduate reading programs. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate and graduate students, results in publications, and contributes to advancing the department, university, profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace inclusion as a university community member. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Full-time teaching responsibilities include teaching literacy courses, practicum supervision, and student teaching field experiences. Research expectations include publication, grant activity, and dissemination of scholarly work. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other educational and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels and participation in community organizations relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and in a hybrid format or courses in the evenings or on weekends. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminars or University Learning Communities or participate in other programs to improve student success.

NLU’s graduate program in reading is nationally recognized and offers Reading Teacher Endorsement (non-degree/M.Ed.) and Reading Specialist Preparation (M.Ed/EDS) in online, virtual, and on campus formats. Reading faculty also teach in the Teaching and Learning doctoral program (Reading, Language, & Literacy major).

We are currently seeking a colleague with an earned doctorate in literacy education and expertise in literacy assessment and the diagnosis of reading difficulties. A minimum of three years of preK-12 teaching is required as is research-based knowledge of literacy teaching and learning. Priority will be given to candidates with experience teaching in urban schools, working with bilingual/biliterate learners, and using technology to enhance student learning. Members of the faculty are expected to be involved with partner schools as well. This position is based in the Chicago area and may require travel to our four Chicago area campuses. Essential Responsibilities

  • Teach graduate courses in literacy methods to in-service (and possibly pre-service) teachers
