The School of Education seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor in Teacher Education. Responsibilities will be to teach courses in elementary and secondary literacy education, advising elementary education students, committee work including accreditation. Teach on and off-campus courses.

The start date for this position will be August 2023.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Ability to teach both Elementary and Secondary Education reading courses and graduate program courses.
  • Ability to teach methods courses and other core education courses.
  • Provide clinical experience and student teacher supervision.
  • Actively participate with department faculty and attend monthly meetings.
  • Maintain required office hours for student advising and fulfill mandatory course assessment requirements.
  • Provide advising to students within the School of Education.
  • Teach courses in Reading/Literacy and other courses as appropriate at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Primary assignment is the Big Rapids campus. Other duties may include supervision of student teachers or interns, off-campus instruction at regional sites, and teaching via distance learning technologies.
  • Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in University committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Responsibilities of the position include: scholarly research, effective and culturally responsive undergraduate and graduate teaching, and service. The primary teaching assignment will be teaching online, distance, and face-to-face courses in our undergraduate and Master of Arts in teaching (MAT) programs. The candidate is expected to have experience integrating culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy into courses and providing expertise regarding research-based practices of culturally responsive STEM education. The candidate is expected to develop and sustain an active research agenda that includes scholarly research activities, publishing manuscripts, presenting research at professional conferences, and attaining extramural grants. Relatedly, a component of this position is to develop sustainable STEM education initiatives for K-12 learners in collaboration with STEM content area faculty across colleges on many exciting NC A&T STEM research initiatives (e.g. autonomous technology, metaverse, cybersecurity).   • Analyzing current and proposed curricula, student feedback, and teacher performance evaluations to determine gaps and needs.
  • Co-develop an anti-oppressive framework to be used by curricular redesign educators and administrators.
  • Scaffold existing and new curricular content and student assessments related to the anti-oppression medical education program objectives and curricular threads.
  • Gathering information from educators, support staff, students, and other relevant stakeholders as needed to inform capacity-building needs and faculty development. Providing workshops and instructional materials to improve lesson delivery and admin processes.
  • Developing new and more effective curricula, learning outcomes, and teaching methods.
