The School of Education, Social Work and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) announces its search for an Assistant Teaching Professor (ranked non-tenure-track) position in the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Foundations (ELPF). Specifically, the School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences seeks candidates with expertise and professional experience in PK-12 school-level educational administration. This is a 9-month, benefit-eligible position.

The individual selected for the position will join a dedicated and collaborative group of faculty and staff.  The primary responsibilities are to teach graduate courses, advise graduate students in PK-12 educational administration programs leading to eligibility for licensure as a PK-12 school (building-level) administrator, and contribute to other program activities as needed. The individual in this position will also collaborate closely with the UMKC Pathways to Leadership in Urban Schools (PLUS) program, which provides intensive job-embedded residency-type field experiences and professional development opportunities to select leader candidates. We seek candidates who engage with principles and themes of diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural responsiveness, social justice, and globalism in their teaching, service, and other professional activity.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Teach three courses per fall semester and four courses per spring semester relevant to the candidate’s expertise. Courses taught will include graduate-level coursework in educational administration and may also include undergraduate general education coursework
  • Advise students in the masters and/or educational specialist programs in PK-12 school administration
  • Engage in service to the program and department, including (though not limited to) conducting program assessments, attending and actively engaging in program and division meetings, and collaborating with PLUS faculty on professional development and community partnerships
  • Act as a liaison between ELPF faculty and the Missouri Professors of Educational Administration organization

Teaching Responsibilities:

We are seeking outstanding instructors (TSPs) who can teach courses in ATDP’s Elementary Division (ED), Secondary Division (SD), and Global Programs (GP). Final course format (online or on-site) will depend on public health orders and/or University policies as well as enrollment minimums.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, duties include:

Under the general direction of the Education Department Chair, Hood College’s Education Department seeks a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor of education beginning August 1, 2023. Successful candidates possess an earned doctoral degree in curriculum & instruction or a closely related field and have both practical and philosophical experience and expertise in historical, philosophical, and social perspectives in education related to effective teaching and learning. College level teaching experience, especially in science education, is preferred. The assignment features teaching undergraduate and graduate level education courses. Preference will be shown to candidates with prior public-school teaching experience in the United States of America.

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Teaching (60%)

  • Teach undergraduate courses, in person, in education for programs in Early Childhood Education, Elementary/Special Education, and Secondary Education. Focus is on curriculum, lesson planning, assessment, and science education.
  • Teach evening online graduate courses in education for master’s programs in Curriculum and Instruction, Multidisciplinary Studies, Reading Specialization, and Educational Leadership. Focus is on curriculum development and assessment, research methods, and action research.
  • Plan course syllabi/assignments to meet Hood College and departmental curriculum requirements.
  • Critique performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, build thinking skills, challenge students’ assumptions, and reinforce concepts to include practical application of new skills.
  • Determine grades for assignments and for overall achievement in class. Provide appropriate documentation of grades to students and department as appropriate.
  • Utilize digital and electronic platforms such as Blackboard and Anthology Portfolio (Chalk & Wire) in instruction, record keeping, and data collection purposes.
  • Maintain regular office hours; mentor students; work with students to address problems and resolve issues.
  • Accompany students on field trips or other off-campus learning activities.

Scholarship (20%)

  • Conduct field specific research to enhance the general body of knowledge.
  • Publish findings in professional journals.
  • Conduct research with students.
  • Present research findings and academic papers at professional conferences.

Service (20%)

  • Coordinate undergraduate and/or direct graduate programs, as needed.
  • Advise students.
  • Support and participate in college committees and/or professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet needs of the institution.
  • Support the College initiatives to recruit and retain talented students.
  • Support the department with its Professional Development Schools collaboration.
  • Participate as an active member of the Hood College community.

Weekly work hours vary but average 37.5 hours per week and include evening courses.

Educator Job Fair at the ESC of Northeast Ohio

The Educational Service Center (ESC) of Northeast Ohio will be hosting Job Fairs to assist Ohio’s districts with the recruitment of future educators. On March 15, the ESC will host a virtual Job Fair and May 23, they will host an in-person Job Fair. An email with Registration Links will be sent closer to the end of February.

The ESC partners with 47 school districts across 5 Ohio counties and work with many others throughout the state.

Due to the research that approximately 60% of teachers end up taking their first teaching position within 15 miles of their hometown, they decided to host their own Job Fairs to assist the districts with recruitment of future educators. Their Job Fairs are open to teachers, related service professionals, and leadership candidates.

They are hoping to get the word out as these Job Fairs are new, so please feel free to share the Save the Date flyer attached with graduating educators.

  • Establish a standards-based grading rubric to assessing students around the course objectives.
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the course, both online and in-person.

  • Communicate with the program director on student issues or course questions that arise.
