The Department of Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education (EDSCE) in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a tenure-eligible position in the rank of assistant/ associate in Special Education. This regular title series faculty member will provide expertise in support of the learning and behavior disorders (LBD) program across elementary, middle, and secondary school levels. The assistant/associate professor also will contribute to the climate of diversity and inclusion in special education scholarship. The appointment is nine months, effective August 16, 2023.
Responsibilities:
  • Teach two courses each semester (fall and spring)
  • Conduct a line of research relevant to special education (e.g., peer reviewed publications, grant proposals, presentations)
  • Advise current and incoming students
  • Engage with P12 and university faculty in program planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Ensure innovative programs comply with accreditation and state standards
  • Serve on masters and doctoral committees

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with any changes in District policy and/or the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  • Teach English as a Second Language and related courses to a diverse student population.  This may include teaching a variety of ESL courses, which may include all levels of credit ESL, noncredit ESL (AESL), and language lab. This teaching position may include both day and evening classes, in-person and online classes, and program coordination responsibilities.
  • Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions in support of student success.
  • Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience with relevant pedagogical techniques to engage diverse student populations such as African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.
  • Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.
  • Engage in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
  • Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.
  • Maintain formal office hours; stay current on information as discussed in department and division meetings.
  • Provide an average of one (1) hour per week of college service that supports the division, college and/or District goals through active participation in one or more of the following categories: committee work on the department, division/school, college, and/or district level; non-classroom college, district, or community activities; department/division/school activities, events, or meetings; student club advisor activities or events.
  • Remain current in your discipline, of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to assist and support student success.
  • Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including comply with the applicable Course Outline of Record(s) (COR); respond to and evaluate student work regularly and consistently, inform students on a timely basis of their progress in the course throughout the term; and respond to student academic concerns, as appropriate, in a timely manner.  Comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Job Summary

The Grant and County Adult Education Instructor position will teach GED preparation that includes Reading/Language Arts with a primary emphasis on Mathematics including subjects through the High School Algebra level. Duties will also include student testing, assessment, and advising, and will teach in both Kenton and Grant counties and will include instruction in the local jails.

Job Duties:

  • Teach students in a GED prep track in both Kenton and Grant counties.
  • Subjects will include Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics through the High School Algebra level.
  • Classes at both local jails and in the community when needed.
  • Develop lesson plans and implement instruction (could be in person and online) at various locations.
  • Data collection including testing, academic progress and attendance
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • The schedule will include at least 2 evenings per week.
  • The candidate hired must be able to pass the Test of Adult Basic Education at NRS Level 6 (12.9+) in both Reading and Mathematics.
  • Approximately 25 hours per week will be in Kenton County and the remaining 12.5 hours will be in Grant County.

The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester where each course is 4 credits. Opportunities for summer contracts to teach additional courses will also be available. This position will be responsible for maintaining oversight to ensure literacy program coherence among full-time and adjunct instructors and evaluating transfer courses related to the program.

Related responsibilities include maintaining office hours, advising and mentoring students, scholarly research (especially that which engages students in research experience), student outreach, and developing and maintaining competence with web-assisted teaching technology.

  • Provide service to the department, university, and local community by serving on School of Education and College committees, continuing and establishing partnerships with local school districts, and regularly contributing to curriculum and professional development activities with and for teacher candidates.
  • One of the two positions will take on the responsibility of coordinating the graduate Literacy program. Examples of responsibilities include scheduling courses, recruiting and accepting graduate students, and collaborating with staff, part-time faculty, and graduate assistants. The graduate program coordinator receives release time for this work.
