Assistant Professor – Reading/Writing/Literacy

University of Pennsylvania
Assistant Professor
Philadelphia, PA

The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Reading/Writing/Literacy (RWL) Program. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research programs focus on reading and literacy in the early grades. Penn GSE and the RWL program share a strong ethical commitment to advancing social justice and educational equity, and we seek candidates whose scholarship centers on issues of race and equity and foregrounds an expansive and critical view of literacy.

The successful candidate will have deep knowledge about how children learn to read and a commitment to preparing educators to engage with broadened understandings of reading pedagogy and practice. An ideal candidate would have a background in contemporary literacy theories, familiarity with current reading and literacy policies, experience working with linguistically and culturally diverse learners in the early grades, and interest in children’s literature and texts, broadly conceived. We seek a highly promising early career scholar with a strong research, publishing, and graduate teaching and mentoring potential and a dedication to securing external support for their research.

Penn GSE seeks candidates who, through their research, teaching, and service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. We are strongly committed to Penn’s Action Plan for Faculty Diversity and Excellence and to establishing a more diverse faculty (for more information see: http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/volumes/v58/n02/diversityplan.html). The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/Women/Individuals with disabilities/Protected Veterans are encouraged to apply.
