I honestly feel college is the perfect time to actually explore who it is you are and what it is you want to spend your life doing. I am certain that if I would have stayed at home, even if i did decide to go to college, the experience would have been completely different. I do not believe I would have found the strengths or confidence that being independent reveals or the elements of interdependence we find among friends and peers when our expected support system is not available. I believe everyone is a leader in their own way and it is very important to remember this because it is easy to get lost in comparing ourselves to others especially in a culture where some characteristics get over looked or more recognition than others.
A good example could be the typical college classroom:
- the quite person probably is a great listener
- the class clown (snide remarks, cause of laughter) is brave and full of charisma
- the proclaimed “teacher’s pet” (usually answers/asks all the questions, sits right up front) follows rules and guidelines, clarify directions, models what teacher expects from students
- the one who seems to get in trouble/ cause problems (forget something, turn things in wrong…) challenges the process and assists with developing conflict management strategies
- the teacher provides knowledge, direction and goals
Besides if everyone could be or do everything no one would never need anybody and life would be boring!
