Effects of SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus on Surgical Patients or Practice

Application Deadline: July 15, 2020

Date of Award: August 1, 2020

Amount of Award: USD 30,000.00

The Surgical Infection Society (SIS) is dedicated to the understanding, prevention, and management of surgical infections. The coronavirus pandemic had an unprecedented impact upon surgical patients and practice that is still being defined. Recognizing these circumstances, the SIS Foundation for Education and Research announces a special Request for Proposals (RFP) for basic/translational or clinical research into the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the surgical team, surgical patients, or surgical practice.

Interested applicants should submit a proposal of not more than six pages plus an NIH-style curriculum vitae and budget to Lynn J. Hydo, MBA, Executive Director (lhydo@aol.com) on or before July 15, 2020. Inclusion of preliminary data is encouraged. Applications should reflect relevant multidisciplinary collaboration (e.g., cell biologists, epidemiologists, immunologists, virologists, etc..) depending on the nature of the proposal. Evidence of additional/matching funding for the project will receive favorable consideration. Applications will be adjudicated by the Board of Trustees of the Foundation. Indirect costs will not be awarded per the policy of the Foundation.

The successful applicant will be required to provide a 30-minute SIS Virtual Grand Rounds presentation via webinar on a topic related to the research proposal, and agree that a video recording of the presentation will be made available on the SIS website.

Dr. Clara Lee Awarded Prestigious ELAM Fellowship

The Ohio State University College of Medicine faculty member and SHARP Core Faculty Member Clara Lee, MD, MPP is a recipient of the 2020 Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program award, a one-year fellowship designed for senior women faculty with high potential for advancement in an executive leadership role. The program will give Dr. Lee the opportunity to use her talents to tackle some of the challenges facing college leaders today, while broadening her experience in ways intended to prepare her for the next level in her career.

Dr. Lee is an associate professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a federally funded health services researcher and reconstructive microsurgeon. An advocate for the advancement of women faculty, she has worked consistently to enhance faculty engagement and improve leadership opportunities for women faculty. In her role as director of the Women in Medicine and Science Committee and Women’s Academic Advancement at Ohio State’s College of Medicine, Dr. Lee leads the college’s career development programming for the advancement of women faculty in medicine and science and advocates for policies that promote gender equity in academic medicine.

As a funded investigator and practicing physician, Dr. Lee is one of those rare individuals who understands what it takes to succeed in both arenas. Her ELAM project will evaluate the college’s recent investments in the recruitment and cultivation of physician-scientists. Specifically, she will design and implement a strategy to assess the college compensation plan’s research incentives and its investment of Medicaid upper payment limit funds to support physicians who have federal research funding. Through this project, Dr. Lee will enhance her skills in strategic planning, finance and operations, while addressing an important knowledge gap for the college.

Congratulations to Dr. Lee for receiving this exceptional fellowship award.
