BIG NEWS: Changes in SHARP!

Scott Chaffee.  Scott Chaffee is the new SHARP administrative assistant, and we are so excited to have him as part of the SHARP team! Scott will be managing both Dr. Santry’s schedule and all calendars, meetings, social media and correspondence for SHARP.

SHARP Meetings.  Based on SHARP Core Faculty feedback, the SHARP meeting schedule is changing, effective April 3, 2019.  We will move to a more flexible and dynamic 90 minute meeting time on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00PM.

  • On the first Wednesday of the month, we will continue to have our Grand Rounds presentation, preceded by a 30 minute session that may be didactic in nature, or may be a quick WIP, roundtable or informational session.
  • On the other Wednesdays of each month, we will have the ability to flex time in 30, 45 or 60 minute increments, to allow for WIP’s of varying duration, didactic informational or educational sessions, journal club discussion, and roundtable faculty meetings.
  • Look for these updates coming to your calendar soon!

SHARP Location.  In just one year, we have outgrown our original space.  On March 27 and 28, we will begin to occupy new space in FOT 620 (Dr. Santry), FOT 618 (Dr. Opalek), FOT 616 (Dr. Strassels) and 614 (several members of SHARP staff).  Some members of the SHARP staff will remain in the Doan 739 space as well.  With the newly allocated space, we now have 16 workspaces for SHARP-affiliated staff and fellows!

Upcoming Presentations:

4/3/19 – Glenn Martinez, PhD, MPH, SHARP Grand Rounds

4/10/19 – Clara Lee, MD, SHARP WIP

National Public Health Week

Each April, the American Public Health Association (APHA) unites the nation around public health issues with National Public Health Week. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the College of Public Health at Ohio State celebrate the week with a lineup of events emblematic of our work in public health.

New Geographic Data Available from NHATS

The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) has released new geographic data files. Restricted geographic data for NHATS sample persons (SPs) and their spouse/partners, children, and household members are now available through round 7.  A restricted file with Rural-Urban Continuum Codes (RUCC) for rounds 1 through 7 is available for qualified researchers.  A public use file indicating whether a sample person was residing in a metropolitan or non-metropolitan county (based on the RUCC) at the time of interview or during the last month of life also has been updated through round 7. Additionally, restricted files linking the NHATS SP to the Dartmouth Health Atlas’s Hospital Referral Region (HRR) have been updated through round 6.

More information on obtaining NHATS files can be found at https://www.nhatsdata.org/.

Dear Cancer Center Community:

Please see the information below from NCI on the reissuance of the P20 SPORE mechanism devoted to cancer health disparities:

NCI has recently reissued this RFA that may be of interest to you.  Some information on this funding opportunity is below.

RFA-CA- 19-034: “Feasibility and Planning Studies for Development of Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs) to Investigate Cancer Health Disparities (P20, Clinical Trials Optional)”

  • Reissue of RFA-CA-17-033 (resubmissions will be accepted)
  • Purpose: The goals for this FOA include developing translational research programs focused on investigating cancer disparities. The P20 grants will support feasibility and planning activities to build cancer disparities research programs, with the expectation that the research programs will become competitive for a full P50 SPORE.
  • New restrictions: Due to a focus on understudied areas of cancer disparities, applications proposing prostate and breast cancer projects are not responsive for this issuance.
  • Four submission dates: June 19, 2019, October 18, 2019, June 19, 2020, and October 18, 2020.
  • A pre-application webinar is planned for late April.  A Notice will be published on the RFA with the date and a link to registration.

Please feel free to pass this information on to others with expertise to compete for this research opportunity.  All inquiries regarding this FOA can be sent directly to Dr. Tiffany Wallace (Tiffany.Wallace@nih.gov).
