• Congratulations to SHARP Core Faculty members Scott Strassels, PharmD, PhD and John F P Bridges, PhD for their involvement in the $65.9 million NIH research grant awarded to The Ohio State College of Medicine. The aim of this grant is to address the opioid epidemic. The announcement from K. Craig Kent, MD, Dean of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, is below.
A message from K. Craig Kent, MD: Congratulations to Rebecca Jackson, MD, professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, director of Ohio State’s Center for Clinical and Translation Science and associate dean for Clinical Research in the College of Medicine, and her entire team for receiving a $65.9 million NIH research grant to address the opioid epidemic. Health and Human Services announced this grant today as part of more than $350 million committed to the HEALing Communities Study, a National Institute on Drug Abuse initiative. This is one of the largest grants in the history of The Ohio State University College of Medicine!
With Dr. Jackson serving as the principal investigator, the Ohio State College of Medicine will lead a consortium of academic, state and community partners that aims to reduce overdose deaths by 40% over three years. The project brings together experts from six universities — Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio University, University of Toledo and Wright State University — and leaders from state agencies and community organizations. They will work to implement evidence-based prevention and treatment interventions across a wide range of settings — including primary care, behavioral health and criminal justice — to provide stakeholders on the front lines of the opioid crisis with real-time, actionable information about the most effective approaches.
More than three dozen Ohio State faculty members are participating in the initiative. They represent the colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Public Affairs, Social Work, Nursing, Education and Human Ecology, Engineering, Arts and Sciences and Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. The Wexner Medical Center and Ohio State Extension are also involved in the initiative.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jackson for her incredible success in writing this phenomenal grant, a project that will dramatically improve health and lives in Ohio through innovation in research.
• SEER*Stat User,
The SEER Program is happy to announce the 1975-2016 SEER Research Incidence data (November 2018 submission) is now available.
Note, the research data now starts with 1975 diagnoses rather than 1973. Now all SEER 9 registries contribute the same years of diagnosis. In addition to this, there are 3 new SEER registries (Idaho, Massachusetts, and New York). These data are included in rate, frequency, and case listing sessions in databases with “SEER 21 Regs Limited-Field” in the name. As indicated by the name, these databases contain a limited number of fields and therefore can’t be used for some statistics, including survival, mp-sir, and prevalence.
All SEER*Stat client-server accounts of the form xxxxx-Nov2017 for accessing the older 1973-2015 data will be deleted on Monday 4/29/2019. To continue using SEER*Stat, please request a new account and submit a data agreement for the 1975-2016 data (Access Request Form). With your new account you will have access to the 1975-2016 SEER Research Data and previous submissions.
• The Surgical Outcomes Club (SOC) is excited to continue its growing presence at the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting (June 2-4, 2019) in Washington DC. The SOC is sponsoring the Surgical and Perioperative Care Interest Group Annual Meeting and an AcademyHealth travel scholarship.
Surgical and Perioperative Care Interest Group Annual Meeting. The Surgical and Perioperative Care Interest Group (IG) meeting will be held Saturday, June 1 from 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm. The IG is a unique network of multi-professional stakeholders focused on research and policy issues most relevant to perioperative care. The IG offers a common venue for surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, proceduralists, nurses, health policy analysts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss common, high priority issues that affect the value of care and quality of life for individuals undergoing surgery. The IG aims to create a forum for groups that commonly do not interact at clinical subspecialty meetings to engage in dialogue and share current and future work. We hope you will consider attending this year!

The Society for Medical Decision Making is now accepting abstracts for Oral and Poster Sessions and proposals for Short Courses to be presented at its 41st Annual Meeting, Many Views on Value. REMINDER – SHARP Meetings. Based on SHARP Core Faculty feedback, the SHARP meeting schedule has changed. We have moved to a more flexible and dynamic 90 minute meeting time on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00PM.
- On the first Wednesday of the month, we will continue to have our Grand Rounds presentation, preceded by a 30 minute session that may be didactic in nature, or may be a quick WIP, roundtable or informational session.
- On the other Wednesdays of each month, we will have the ability to flex time in 30, 45 or 60 minute increments, to allow for WIP’s of varying duration, didactic informational or educational sessions, journal club discussion, and roundtable faculty meetings.
DIRECTOR’S OFFICE HOURS
Dr. Strassels’ office hours are every Wednesday from 8:00AM-11:00AM. Contact Scott Chaffee (scott.chaffee@osumc.edu) to schedule a 30 minute block of one on one time with the SHARP Scientific Director.
