Project Statement

For this project, we had to create a map from Hayes hall to the destination of our choice. My map I designed highlights the stark contrast between industrialized man and organic nature. When I was designing this project, I wanted to incorporate not only the physical path of the map, but also the sounds I heard as I traveled it. I used leading line and contrast with color to establish the path laid out. The final outcome includes tangible words derived from the sounds I heard as I ventured through the path from Hayes Hall to the courtyard behind my dorm. The composition also uses different shades of green to emphasize the aspect of nature and create contrast.

Reflection

This project familiarized me with the process of slow looking. I discovered how oblivious I am to certain elements of my everyday walks, but found that those elements are instrumental to my overall experience. I was challenged with the idea of incorporating more than the visual sense, but through the slow looking, I was able to break down those other aspects like hearing in a clear way. Within the piece itself, I was able to incorporate new drawing techniques I learned like stippling to which added more interest to it. The map legend also posed a challenge because I had to hand right the words. However, I was able to split the legend into two to give me clearer guides.
