Quality Assurance

2024 Quality Assurance

Livestock members are required to complete Quality Assurance Training each year. This training is put on by OSU Extension and is available multiple times beginning in January of each year. The Ohio Department of Agriculture has set a rule that Quality Assurance training must be completed prior to the 45-day mark before the start of a county fair. Failure to complete this training by the 45-day deadline will mean that the animal will not be eligible to be shown or sold at the county fair.

Quality Assurance Test-Out Option

Paulding County Extension and the Paulding County Agricultural Society held discussions in September about the potential to allow our 4-H and FFA livestock youth to test out of Quality Assurance beginning in 2024.  After discussing the option, the consensus was to allow Quality Assurance Test-Out.  Youth must take the test in Paulding County.  Below is the information that pertains to the Quality Assurance Test-Out option.

Youth ages 8-11 (4-H age)

Testing out of Quality Assurance is not an option for youth in this age group. Youth must attend either an in-person or Zoom Quality Assurance session.  Those who fail to complete this prior to 45 days before the start of the Paulding County Fair will NOT be eligible to have their animal(s) at the Paulding County Fair.

 Youth ages 12-14 (4-H age)

Youth may attempt to test out of Quality Assurance in this age group.  Youth who show small animals (poultry and rabbits) will complete the small animal Quality Assurance test.  Youth who show large animals (beef, sheep, swine, dairy, and goats) will complete the large animal Quality Assurance test.  If passed, the youth will not be required to attend an in-person or Zoom Quality Assurance until they are 15 years of age (4-H age).  At that point, youth may try to complete the test again to test out of QA requirements for the rest of their 4-H or FFA career or choose to attend an in-person or Zoom QA.

 Youth ages 15-18 (4-H age)

Youth may attempt to test out of Quality Assurance in this age group. Youth who show small animals (poultry and rabbits) will complete the small animal Quality Assurance test.  Youth who show large animals (beef, sheep, swine, dairy, and goats) will complete the large animal Quality Assurance test.  If passed, the youth will not be required to attend an in-person or Zoom Quality Assurance for the remainder of their 4-H or FFA career.

 About the Test

Youth will only have 1 attempt to pass the Quality Assurance test per year. A passing score is 70% or higher.  Youth will be told their score, but the test will not be returned to them after it is graded.  This test is not easy.  Youth wishing to complete the test-out option are highly encouraged to study before taking the test.  The Quality Assurance Test Study Guide is linked below.
