  1. NSDI initiative.

A multi-institutional group, leaded by Cuban Hydrographic and Cartographic Service (National Office of Hydrography and Geodesy, and GEOCUBA), has started to work in the building of the Cuban Spatial Data Infrastructure over the last year.

So far the following main activities have been carried out:

–         First ideas of creation of the Cuban Spatial Data Infrastructure were published during the II International Congress GEOMATICA 2000 on May 2000.

–         Seminar of Spatial Data Standards with the collaboration of ICA Standards Commission into the framework of GEOMATICA 2000.

–         Feasibility Study to create the National Spatial Data Infrastructure in Cuba, from September 2000 to June 2001.

–         Project of Law Decree to establish the foundation of a National Committee of Spatial Data, who will regulate the creation of the Cuban Spatial Data Infrastructure and the metadata and standards associated. Currently in phase of analysis.

–         A Cuban delegation attended the Cartographic Conference of America, celebrated on January 2001 in United Nations, New York. Inclusion of Cuba as observer member of the Permanent Committee of Spatial Data Infrastructure of America (CP IDEA).

–         A Cuban delegation attended the 5ta GSDI Conference and the III CP IDEA Meeting on May 2001 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The Cuban experience of institutional framework, standards and catalog services into the development of the NSDI was shown. Inclusion of Cuba as full member of the Permanent Committee of Spatial Data Infrastructure of America (CP IDEA).

  1. OGC and ISO TC 211.

GEOCUBA began to implement the OpenGIS Simple Feature in 1999. Since then, we have following the new delivered specifications to implement them. Now a Project to implement the OpenGIS Web Map Server, Catalog Interface and GML Specifications has been developed.

Currently Cuba is an observer member of ISO TC/211, but since two months ago, our full membership and our most active role into this organization is been evaluated.

  1. Metadata.

The development of Metadata is just at the beginning in Cuba. Now we are assimilating the international experience, particularly the Content Standard for Digital Metadata Workbook, Version 2.0, FGDC; and ISO 19115 (Draft).

Future Work Schedule:

Date Action
Sept-Dec/2001 Capacity building.
Jan-Feb/2002 Workshop of Metadata and Clearinghouses to data and technology providers.
Mar-June/2002 Implementing of first Metadata under ISO 19115.
