Badge 3: Technology Management

For the Micro Teaching #2 lesson (Using Children’s Literature to teach Educational Psychology: Microteaching 2), we (Susan and I) had prepared two videos and a PowerPoint presentation to aid our teaching. The videos were narrations of two stories (The Rainbow Fish and The Dark). The PowerPoint slides were mainly for delivering content and maintaining the flow of the lesson.

Prior to the day we taught, we had tested to see if our videos and PowerPoint were working properly. As a back up plan, we carried the 2 books to class on the day we were teaching so that we could use them in case the videos failed to work. We were both familiar with the content on the PowerPoint and knew that we would not have trouble steering the lesson even if we did not have the PowerPoint.

We did not run into any problems with technology during teaching. Each of our videos were 5 minutes long (approximately). This was about half the time we were allotted for teaching (20 min). The rest of the ten minutes were utilized to describe how one might use these stories to teach about ‘self-concept’ and ‘self-efficacy’, respectively. We showed  videos before introducing the concepts so that students would start thinking about related ideas before we actually talked about them specifically. The activities in the form of questions were presented at strategic points within the PowerPoint presentation so that the lesson flowed logically from one step to the other.
