Badge 1: Intellectual Property

The lesson on Intellectual Property made me aware of how I can use information available on the Internet in a responsible manner.  I knew about the citation rules in my field (APA style) and the importance of crediting sources of information that one uses for one’s own work. However, I think this class made me understand the nuances of Creative Commons licenses and modify search settings on the Internet so that I get back search results which comprise of content that permit use by others either without modification/with modification.

Over the time period of the entire course, my sense of how to use information on the Internet in a responsible manner improved. When I taught the Micro Teaching #1 lesson on ‘Vygotsky and Web 2.0’ I had cited all the journal articles and media forms that I had utilized at the end of my presentation in APA style (Click to see: Powerpoint_narmada). However, at this point of time I still did not understand clearly how to protect my own work. Therefore, this presentation lacked a copyright statement and a creative commons license.

By the end of the course, I had better understanding of protecting my own work and respecting the work of others. Therefore, in Micro Teaching #2 (Using Children’s Literature to teach Educational Psychology) my work included a copyright statement and a creative commons license. The license indicated my permission to let others share and adapt my work as long as they give appropriate credit to my material, indicate if any modifications were made.  Please click on the link to the PowerPoint presentation below to see evidence for Badge 1 (see first and last slide). All use of information sources in the course was for teaching purposes and did not in any way reduce the market value of the original works. In other words, guidelines for fair use were followed while creating material for the course.
