The Need:
Over 5.3 million people in the U.S. live with brain injury-related disabilities, often facing long-term physical inactivity due to unique barriers such as motor impairments, planning difficulties, and lack of affordable, adapted fitness services. Regular physical activity is linked to improved independence, quality of life, and neurocognitive recovery for chronic brain injury (CBI) survivors. However, access to supportive exercise programs often declines after formal rehabilitation ends, leaving many without the resources needed to stay active.
The Solution:
The SBIR SPIRIT Club CBI Pathway grant is an NIH Fast-Track project aimed at developing an on-demand, evidence-based streaming platform to promote physical activity and wellness for CBI survivors.
In Phase I, the project will adapt SPIRIT Club’s existing platform, designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to include tailored educational modules and fitness programs for CBI survivors.
Phase II will test and evaluate the platform’s effectiveness in improving physical activity levels and outcomes among CBI survivors, with the long-term goal of increasing commercialization and expanding its reach.
