PAST

Half the Sky Foundation

Half the Sky Foundation

In the past 18 years, I have grown up in a military family in Beijing, the capital of China. Since my grandfather has served in Chinese People’s Liberation Army for several decades, I have been deeply influenced by the background with army’s spirits and personalities that I always try to be a righteous man. Despite my grandfather was a general, my father did not choose to serve in the army. Both of my parents are working for some non-government organizations. The organization which my father works for is called Half the Sky Foundation, China Care program. It is a foundation donated by an generous American to help sick and abandoned children in China. By my father’s suggestion,

I have worked as a volunteer there for one month three years ago that I realized that it should be my duty to treasure my happiness and also share it with that kids. My mother is the only Christian in my family. Her piousness enable her to teach me by sharing some stories in the Bible, which are very meaningful. Basketball is my interest that I have spent so much time on it. Although asian may not have too much talent on this sport, I still believe that hard-working could take any obstacle to achieve the goal. With this faith, I held the summer training camp for my school basketball team in Sanya. After seven days hard-working, we made it to the finals.

NOW

Junior High

Junior High

I studied in Chaoyang Foreign Language School for my junior high. The president of school is an old lady called Mrs. Hao who always taught us ‘Character first’ and ‘Be the best I can be’. She was also the one that showed me another way to get into college, studying abroad, which made the foundation for my future study. I will graduate from my senior high school in less than a week. After I finished the first year study in the Middle School attached to Northern Jiaotong University, I made one of the most important decision in my life, giving up the Chinese Gaokao(College Entrance Examination) and preparing for my college application to the United States.

It was a tough time for me, a Chinese high school student who has not learnt any international course, to prepare TOEFL and SAT test. First of all, the language differences from Chinese to English through the courses was the most difficult part of the studying. Although the knowledge is the same, to transfer those information to another language is still a big deal. Then, the critical thinking was another barrier to cross. With the faith to study abroad and the patience I have, I had received several offers from colleges at the end of the applying season. I am grateful that I have been through this period, which made me much stronger.

FUTURE
After I have received those offers from the colleges in the U.S., I started to do my research for my final decision. At first, like other students, I checked the U.S. News school ranking and I found that OSU has the highest ranking of my four admitted school, so I had a bit preference to admit this school. Ohio State is a college with perfect athletic team, and I had mentioned that I am a huge basketball fan so that OSU has really big attraction to me.

The tuition is also a significant factor for me and it is such a release that tuition of OSU is not too expensive. By the long-term consideration, I finally decided to accept the offer from OSU. My current major is economics but I am not really interested in it now. The reason why I chose it during my application is that OSU does not offer undeclared or undecided major to international students so that I have to made the choice in my current preferences. I would like to change my major to the sport industry when I talk to my advisor. I am so interested in sport that I may work in this with all of my efforts, and China has a really huge potential in future sport market: for instance, China Basketball Association, which will become much more professional that will need more sport agents.
